Since the 1980s, when the AIDS epidemic decimated their community, gay men — or MSMs (men who have sex with men) as they are called by federal agencies — have not been allowed to donate blood. This ban has been present for way too long and has overstayed its welcome in the United States. The original intentions of this ban were to prevent the spread of AIDS/HIV due to a lack of technology to test the blood.
