Tasers are designed not to kill but to subdue and subduing an attacker is the only legitimate reason for using either a taser or a handgun. So, it's a no-brainer. •	Abortion	ProComments I'm mostly concerned with the effects of the political discourse surrounding abortion and think both sides are hurting society with their discourse but the pro-choice side even more so. It's the discourse and its effects moreso than direct policy effects. And yes the quality of discourse does have real long-term effects on a society so it's a legitimate thing to consider.
•	Affirmative Action	ConComments Racism is still a real issue in this country, but we're not going to fix it by discriminating based on race.
•	Animal Rights	ProComments For, but not a vegetarian. I don't think we're necessarily "better" than they are, but animals eat other animals and we are animals. I am appalled by how animals are treated on factory farms. Not only that but the way they are treated often has bad effects for our own health.
•	Barack Obama	ConComments President Obama is EVIL! Here's why: 1. Warrantless Spying 2. Indefinite Detention without trial 3. Continuing to Exclude the Chagossian people from their homeland. And yet I voted for him. I've had a change of heart though. I have realized that if we keep voting for the lesser of two evils our candidates will just keep getting more evil. Romney may have turned out worse, but I should have voted for Jill Stein. Only if people hold standards to be able to consider voting for someone in the first place, regardless of the other choices will things change.

•	Capitalism	N/OComments They should have a "mixed opinion" option. I believe we should have some capitalism and some socialism, mostly capitalism but in this current political climate I would vote for an avowed socialist over most of the mainstream pro-capitalist candidates.
•	Civil Unions	ProComments Better than nothing but we should let them get married for real.
•	Death Penalty	ConComments Innocent people have been executed before. It is not an acceptable risk.
•	Drug Legalization	ProComments The war on drugs is a drain on our budget, fuels irrational paranoia and the chipping away of constitutional liberties, and at times innocents have been killed by drug enforcement. I do think there needs to be regulation. In particular some of the heavier drugs that have major impacts on behavior should only be sold and used in licensed recreational or recreational/therapeutic salons where experts on the effects of the drugs equipped with any needed antidotes and restraints can keep an eye on the person. That is a much more effective way of keeping the public safe than trying to ban them. Consider the stories about bath salts. Had we had a non-prohibitive regulatory scheme to run them through we could've required they be used only under supervision in salons and the people who took it may have chosen this route and before they could've posed any threat to themselves or others they would've been restrained and instead of these horror stories we would have had a few people who just exper
•	Electoral College	ConComments This is an outdated institution created because the slave states were afraid of the more populous north gaining too much power. Few issues are state-specific anymore. We don't need an electoral college to make sure states are fairly represented. It should be an instant-run off (ranking the candidates instead of winner take all) popular vote system.
•	Environmental Protection	ProComments We have arsenic in our rice and mercury in our high fructose corn syrup (not that hfcs isn't unhealthy enough). Global Warming is also a concern and yet in spite of problems getting twice as worse nobody is doing anything.
•	Estate Tax	ProComments Currently it is only applied to people making over 4 million. Seriously? People making 1 million can't afford to part with a small, just tiny portion of that inheritance?
•	European Union	ProComments We should also have an American Union, but not NAFTA. We need to include free movement along with free trade. (Why should goods be free to move but not people?). And a common currency. Extending human rights, environmental protection agreements, and labor laws to all members of the union could help develop standards of living throughout the Western Hemisphere. When the United States declared the Monroe Doctrine we pledged our support for all peoples in this hemisphere. We should even let Cuba in so long as they adopt free and fair elections and human rights protections. They can stay communist if they want, so long as they become a communist democracy.
•	Euthanasia	ProComments For people with terminal illnesses ONLY.
•	Federal Reserve	UndComments Not sure about this one.
•	Flat Tax	ConComments A million does not need "X%" of their income as much as someone making $30,000 does and taking it away does not effect them just as much. To promote growth and create jobs we should offer tax cuts per American job created with more tax cuts going to smaller businesses that create jobs than larger, wealthier businesses.
•	Free Trade	N/OComments Not really no opinion but not undecided either. I think free trade is theoretically a good thing. The whole world should have free trade BUT ONLY IF it comes with international standards for environmental protection, consumer protection, human rights, and labor rights.
•	Gay Marriage	ProComments Let them get married. If marriage is about kids then gay couples adopt and the adopted kid would be better off if their parents could get married.
•	Global Warming Exists	ProComments The scientific consensus here is huge. The science of how the greenhouse effect works is pretty straight forward. Carbon dioxide and other gases sticks more sunlight in the atmosphere, leads to more warming. It's clear it exists and denying it isn't going to make it go away.
•	Globalization	ProComments We really can't roll this back. The problem isn't globalization it is corporatization. We need to get the whole world involved in putting people before profits.

•	Gun Rights	ConComments OK, not completely against but we need more regulation and ban assault rifles.
•	Homeschooling	ProComments People criticize homeschooling because they think kids won't socialize. But think about it. People are social animals. The kids and their parents will want them to socialize and will make sure that they do. School is not the only nor the best opportunity for kids to learn social skills. Joining clubs is better, because if the kid is excluded or bullied the kid can join another one. But with school typically the kid is SOL and this can seriously hurt social skills development if the kid spends his teenage years in a hostile environment. What would be even better is if we had widespread online public schooling available.

•	Iran-Iraq War	ConComments We don't need more wars, especially when this country has its own problems. When we exclude an innocent peaceful people (the Chagossians) from their homeland of islands just because we want a military base on a portion of one of the islands we have no moral authority to tell other countries what to do, let alone go to war.
•	Labor Union	ProComments Employer-employee relationships are asymmetrical. With very few exceptions the employer has the upper hand and unions help to give workers some weight.
•	Legalized Prostitution	ProComments Like alcohol, cigarettes, and drugs banning prostitution doesn't stop people from seeing prostitutes. Legalized prostitution means we can require condoms, test for STDs, and we can guarantee the right of sex workers to form unions and go on strike (as opposed to suffering under a controlling pimp).

•	Medical Marijuana	ProComments And legalize recreational marijuana. For medical marijuana when studies prove it is effective for something and a physician thinks it's the best treatment it should be free as well when we have universal health care.

•	Smoking Ban	UndComments I'm in the middle on this one. Smoking bans did overall help health by reducing second-hand smoking. At the same time it did hurt some small businesses. I think what we need is licenses for allowing smoking on the premises given out to just a few businesses. That way nonsmokers still have plenty of options to go to bars, bowl. or eat out without having to inhale smoke fumes and smokers can have their own places too.

In this recent debacle the better thing to do would've been to give stimulus funds to ordinary Americans, requiring they first use it to pay off the mortgage. That would've stopped the foreclosures and bailed out Wall Street indirectly (by people being able to pay their mortgages).
•	Term Limits	ProComments Incumbents have way too much advantage for us not to have term limits.
•	Torture	ConComments When the Inquisition used it people confessed TO BEING WITCHES! Torture doesn't work, innocent people lie just to get it to stop. It's not only wrong, it's bad for intelligence-gathering.

•	Welfare	ProComments BUT unless you are disabled welfare should not just be free money, it should be a card that can only be spent on approved items. No more welfare-for-cigarettes or welfare-for-alcohol! People should have the right to live and hence appropriate housing, access to food, water, adequate hygiene, and health care. People should have access to education and job training programs too to help them get out of their situation. But "welfare" should not be an easy living situation. Their use of welfare funds should be limited even to only healthy foods and no junk food, and electronic devices should depend on whether they can show it's needed to help them get and maintain a job.
