America Does Not Need More STEM Education

Daktoria
RoyLatham

This is an argument against the common belief that STEM is the way out of the current financial crisis and into a new age of prosperity. To be clear, I used to personally agree with the belief, but have changed my mind after reflecting about labor economics. As much as any other market, labor markets adhere to how when supply goes up, price goes down. The key to modern prosperity, therefore, is not to increase supply. Raising the supply of STEM in America would only depreciate its value. Inst...

Margaret Thatcher should not be granted a state funeral

brian_eggleston
RoyLatham

Margaret "the milk snatcher" Thatcher, the wretched former Prime Minister of Great Britain, whose crusades against the working class devastated the nation's heavy industries and threw millions of decent, hard-working people onto the scrapheap of society, is now an elderly woman and is officially certified as insane (whereas when she was in power she was merely suspected of being so). Given her advanced years it can't be long now before she joins Colonel Gadafi, Saddam Hussein, Kim Jong Il and...

Anime is an art form akin to novels or movies. The definition of anime is sometimes controversial among fans of the art form who worry if Korean or American work is really anime. For the purpose of this debate, the definition is:

I am curious to see how anyone can argue that the purpose of any law is not to legislate morality.

The U.S. shuld build and maintain a border fence.

RoyLatham
DoubtingDave

A border fence should be one of the mechanisms used to control immigration and the flow of goods over U.S. borders. There are already border fences in place and they should be maintained. Border fences should be extended as needed to aid border security. This should include an approximately 700 mile double fence on the US border with Mexico.

Evolutionary change will best resolve the issues of abortion, welfare, and social security in the U.

RoyLatham
lannan13

William Buckley defined conservatism as "the doctrine of evolutionary change." By that definition, one could want a radical outcome, but believe it should achieved in a conservative way, step-by-step. In this debate we consider three specific issues that the American electorate must resolve. As Pro, I will advocate the evolutionary approach to resolving the issue. My opponent will advocate a specific solution to each p...

Philosophy and the humanities are underrated in education.

Danielle
RoyLatham

I would like to thank my esteemed opponent in advance for accepting this debate. I look forward to what I hope will be a very thought provoking and insightful discussion :)

For all intents and purposes, I believe the resolution is pretty straight-forward. By underrated, I will be arguing that increasing the focus in humanities and/or philosophy in education, particularly higher education, would be beneficial to society. I will contend that there is an increasing problematic...
