Why change the word "marriage"s meaning?

Lourencosmind
Stephen_Hawkins

I feel that legalizing gay marriage is just a provocation to the Church. Knowing that the Church created marriage, and that it opposes homosexuals, in my view it is extremely troubling an homosexual wanting to marry another man. If I were an homosexual I wouldn't want to adopt a custome created and practiced by an institution that hates me. Whenever I see homosexuals rioting in favour of same-sex marriage, the idea that they don't feel belonged in our society always crosses my mind. Why won't th...

This House Believes that the Social Contract is a viable political theory

Stephen_Hawkins
YYW

The debate is as simple as it stands. My opponent should spell out the social contract theory in his first round (instead of using it solely for acceptance). The social contract I refer to is the one used in political philosophy - the concept of the social contract as a form of legitimizing the state. I look forward to whoever accepts this debate for a rigorous competition. Note the debate has a smaller character limit than most - 4000 characters maximum....

Voluntaryism is correct.

GregVCross
Stephen_Hawkins

Here is the wikipedia description of it, which I agree with completely. My position is that wide-spread adoption of Voluntaryism would makes society function more efficiently and increase average, median, and net welfare. Voluntaryism (or sometimes voluntarism), is a libertarian philosophy which holds that all forms of human association should be voluntary.[1] The principle most frequently used to support voluntaryism is the non-aggression principle (NAP). It is closely associated with, and o...

This house believes ethical egoism is false

Stephen_Hawkins
YYW

The rules of this debate are rather straight forward:1) There is to be no use of separation of arguments through subheadings or headings, or any technique other than basic essay writing (that is, paragraph-by-paragraph). 2) The definition of ethical egoism is roughly that moral agents value only their self-interest. This definition may be contested, but massive departure from its meaning counts as a forfeit of the debate.3) 4,000 characters, f...

This House Believes that God does not Exist

Stephen_Hawkins
AeneasPhebe

A simple enough debate. I hope to welcome my opponent into debating formally on this website by a topic I am sure he will want to take up and enjoy. God is explicitly one found in the Christian tradition, with the common characteristics we crudely ascribe (powerful, good, intelligent, etc.) My friend can of course define Him more specifically. The first round is for acceptance (and definitions). The second and third round are for arguments, while the final round is for concluding remarks. I l...

This house believes that evolution is more defensible than Young Earth Creationism

Stephen_Hawkins
Founder

This debate is rather simple, and based off of a forum post. The burden of proof is shared. The first round is for acceptance, though my opponent can reasonably set forth some definitions if they wish or present their case for creationism. All sources and similar must go into the debate (and not hte comments) for fairness - I personally will otherwise over-source and it will weaken the debate's fluidity. In sum, however, standard debating rules and customs apply, and...
