It's nearly impossible to win a one round debate.
No matter what I say in the first round, it opens up for one quick counter argument and no chances at rebuttal. There's the off chance that the opponent fails to read the topic appropriately but those are fairly rare. Largely the only person who would take such a debate is somebody who has thought of some clever way to counter the original argument. For example, this debate might be countered with various claims and accusations and I would be powerless to rebut those claims and thus lose....
Civil Unions
Any rights which the government deigns to give to the citizens being governed by that government must be given to all citizens. There are at present hundreds of rights which exist for couples by way of the government and they must be universally applied for gay couples as well. If a couple wishes to enter a civil union it should not be for the government to say that you can't have rights because we don't allow those rights except for parties of opposite genders. A campaign lives and dies by money and it's getting worse and worse every election cycle.
