I'm sure everyone has heard the saying, "Sticks and stones can break my bones, but words can't hurt me any." This statement rings true in my mind. Basically, the action of uttering words does not effect nor harm you, unless you allow it to do so.

There are a countless number of words or combination of words that could be said to someone. Some are good (compliments), and some are not good (insults). But what makes an insult a damaging remark? If i tell you, "You are an smelly jerk," why would that (or why would it not) make you mad? If your reaction to this statement holds truth, if you really are smelly, and you really are a jerk, then you can relate to this message and consider it unkind for pointing out a flaw in your life. You see, the only way words can hurt you is if you admit to them as true. In other words, it is your choice to be insulted.

On the flip side, if I say to you, "Your hair so so downright blonde, it's ugly," I'm sure I can receive a comment back from you on how your hair really is brown and that I'm a blind fool for making such a statement. I, in turn, will be quite insulted for you pointing out the fact that my vision is terrible and hence, I will surely be insulted.

So in summary, unlike a stick or a stone, you decide whether the words being flung at you can really make a damaging impact.

With regret, this round was forfeited because the debater did not post their argument within the allotted time.

I was looking forward to this debate, as debaterjake seems to be a good debater, but something must've come up as this will be his first loss to-date. Good job, NonInDelicto!

depends on
the person you're saying things to, (someone who's really sensitive vs. someone who doesn't care)
what you say to them, (something nonsense like you're purple as opposed to something truly mean)
how they feel about what you're saying, (someone who is extremely self concious of their weight, and you called them fat)
your intentions behind what you said (joking around or trying to hurt them)
your relationship with them (if a total stranger walked up to you and called you stupid you'd probably be like, ok, whatever, but if someone like your spouse or a parent called you stupid their opinion would matter more)
how many times it happens (if you call someone fat once they'll probably forget about it eventually, if someone is repeatedly called fat they will begin to believe it)

so depending on all that and probably more what you say will have a different effect. But sometimes what people say can cause psychological damage, which does lead to bodily harm, some of it worse than that caused by 'sticks and stones' :)

wow, that was really long... lol

This debate depends all on the person/individual's feelings. One person can care less, while another person can feel another way.
