 Pro 1 is equal to .99999999...or 1=.99999999... ===Rules===No semantics.First round is for acceptance.I ask my opponent to accept the laws of math as true.In .99999999... the 9's go on forever. Report this Argument Con 1 is not equal to .999 Now in math you round up, but that doesn't mean its equal. EX: 1+1+1= 3 .999+.999+.999=2.997; wee short of 3. Now lets say this 45/N(this will be 1) that is 45(pieces of a cookie) Now lets say .999 is the same as 1, that should give us the right answer,right? 45/.999 that gives 45.045; a little difference.Report this Argument Pro ===Rebuttal=== I did not say that 1=.999I said 1=.99999999... with the 9's going on forever.===Proof===1. x=.99999999... 2. 10x=9.99999999...3. 10x-x=9.99999999...-.99999999... 4. 9x=95. x=16. 1=.99999999...===Explanation of Proof=== 1. This establishes a variable x equal to .99999999...2. Multiplying both sides by 103. Because x=.99999999... I can subtract one side by x and the other by .99999999... and have a valid equation 4. 10x-x=9x and 9.99999999...-.99999999...=95. Dividing both sides by 96. They both equal x and therefore equal each other============================================Vote Pro Report this Argument Con You know what i got boredReport this Argument Pro Con didn't respond to any of my arguments and has therefore conceded.Vote Pro! Report this Argument Con Yeah, But still .99999999 is a different numberReport this Argument Pro If they're different, than show me what's wrong with my argument. As you have not done so, it still stands.Vote Pro! Report this Argument Con 3. 10x-x=9.99999999...-.99999999... 4. 9x=9lolwut? Most times you round up. Report this Argument Pro I don't see where I rounded up.10x-x=9x9.99999999...-.99999999...=9Please point it out.Vote Pro! Report this Argument Con oh okayReport this Argument

drafterman, I meant that 0.999... had seemed to me that it was simply the closest real number to 1 and not equivalent to 1, though I've changed my opinion. I guess it was the boggling idea of infinite decimals that deceived me into thinking otherwise. Nonetheless, I should note that numbers can indeed be expressed in different versions, but those versions are not necessarily equal. For example, 3.0 isn't necessarily equal to 3 because 3 may be a rounded up version of 2.9.

DictatorIsaac: What do you mean they "obviously aren't" equal? You do realize that, in mathematics, numbers can be represented in a variety of ways, right? Like 3 = 3.0 = 3/1.

0.9999.... is simply one way of representing what would more commonly be represented by 1.

It's simple:

x = 0.9999....
10x = 9.9999....
10x - x = 9.9999.... - x
10x - x = 9.9999.... - 0.9999....
9x = 9
x = 1

Ergo, 1 = 0.9999....

Limits. Resolution affirmed.

From what limited knowledge I have, 1 still can't equal 0.9 recurring. Remember, x = 0.9 recurring, and x and 1 must be identical to be equal, yet they obviously aren't. Regardless of what one does to both sides to make the equation seem like 0.9 is indeed equal to 1, the problem ends up being the same "0.9 = 1." A is A.

I'm no mathematician and I know that it seems entirely counter intuitive, but trust me, you and the voters who agree with you are wrong. This has been debated 1000s of times on this site alone. http://www.debate.org...
Have a read through a few of these other debates on it and maybe it will start to sink in.

Ok feverish, I agree with you there, that the voters on my debate claimed that I "proved the impossible". But look at the voters who voted here say,

CGBSpender: "CAPLlock is definitely right, but did a very poor job of proving it."

Brenavia: "Put up a good fight next time Con, and you would have won."

I disagree with you feverish in claiming that I won the other debate because my opponent got confused and conceded, I won because I was correct.

t-man has challanged me to a debate on this topic and I will accept this as soon as I get back from vacation. Then perhaps that debate that t-man and I will have, will be a better debate than both my previous debate (on this topic) and this debate.

lol EFR, you got lucky in that other debate on this, because your opponent got confused and conceded. You won, but were stil totally wrong as voters noted.
