 Pro This is in response to the numerous 1 = 2 posts with the mathematical error. ****************************************** Let A = 1.99999999... repeating. 10 * A = 19.999999... repeating. Subtract A from each side... 10A - A = 18.0 9A = 18.0 Divide by 9. A = 2 Substitute. 1.9999999... repeating = 2.Report this Argument Con 1.9999999... repeating does NOT = 2. If 1.9999999... repeating = 1.9999999... repeating AND 2 = 2 THEN 1.9999999... repeating cannot ever = 2 Otherwise A could have equalled 3. Let A = 3. 10 * A = 30. Subtract A from each side... 10A - A = 18.0 9A = 18.0 Divide by 9. A = 3 Substitute. 1.9999999... repeating = 3 AND 2 = 3 A THEORETICAL POSSIBILITY, BUT A MATHEMATICAL IMPOSSIBILITY Therefore 1.9999... (repeating) is NOT equal to 2. Solo,
While I agree that 1.99999...does not equal 2, your math is flawed.
Let A = 3.

10 * A = 30.

Subtract A from each side...

10A - A = 18.0 <-- NOT TRUE! 9 x 3 = 27, NOT 18

9A = 18.0

Here, think about this: Graphs of square-root functions. Sure, the graph gets very, very, very close to the asymptote, and for all purposes is essentially the same, but is it really? No. Same thing here.

For anyone who is interested in seeing the proof that I was talking about (showing that 1.999 repeating is NOT equal
to 2), you can go check it out at the following link:

there you go, kennard. Have at it.

Do you promise to go easy on me?

Rob1Billion: I am still waiting for you to start a debate with the same proof shown here and challenge me.
Posted by kennard 9 years ago
Well Rob1Billion, create a debate with the same proof, challenge me, and I'll write mine.

this math is very simple, and very straight to the point. Kennard: please stop talking about your proof and show it to us!

I'm a mathematician and I can tell you, that arguments from authority are complete crap. Though Tarzan is right, he's being cheap and making up a nonsense argument. I personally have won a debate that 2 + 2 = 4, and can tell you that math based debates are silly and trite.

I am a mathematician as well. And the fact is that 1.999... is NOT equal to 2. I have a proof about this, and I can show that the proof made by call "JustCallMe Tarzan" is wrong.
The flaw is in the fourth line, the one that indicates that
10A - A =18.0
