The Government Should Not Fund The Arts

Phil
nypuller

The US Government, or any government for that matter, should not be in the business of funding the art industry. For the same reason the government shouldn't fund gas companies or stock brokers, artists should have to prove their worth in the marketplace. Professional artists choose their job like the rest of us (unless you live in a socialistic country). Artists know exactly what the salary and risk is before they choose their profession. The government should not take someone else's hard ea...

Are "old" bands really better than newer ones?

BravesFan33
zainie143

First of all, let's just consider "old" as Metallica and before...unless the band is still writing and releasing albums. I find it extremely annoying just how overrated, in general, these bands are, at least sound-wise. -Catchiness... The purpose of the sound of a song is to be catchy, is it not? Isn't the main goal of the sound of a song to revolve around a catchy, entertaining, great-sounding chorus? Only a select few older musical groups could master this. They were great musicians...

In middle school, the band course is more challenging than the chorus course.

I think that band is harder than chorus because it takes years and years to master an instrument whereas to master the skill of singing it only takes six months to a year. Also, you have to work VERY VERY hard to achieve your full potential in band. You have to practice for at least half an hour EVERY day to achieve your goals. Also, there is usually many different melodies and rythyms going on at one time. In the choral program, there is usually two basically similar melodies and one base melod...

Middle School Chorus is harder than Middle School band.

jgirl247

Middle School Chorus is harder than Middle School Band because according to most middle school chorus teachers must teach their student musical theory, history, vocal technique, vocal production, choral technique, expressiveness, dynamics, tempo, musical terms, performance, musical literacy, rhythm, pitch, melody, harmony, score study, and analysis. That is lot to learn compared to what band has to learn. This is multi tasking, tempo, musical terms, rhythm, score study, and analysis. Chorus lear...

Rap music of the "gangsta" variety is degrading our society

Kristallo
clsmooth

I am not in favor of rap music and the gang culture that has emerged hand in hand with it. The true purpose of rap does not seem to be to create anything of beauty but instead to challenge, indeed, to pick a fight with the status quo of American society. In other words, it declares "we [i.e. the rappers] are going to say the most provoking things towards the status quo that we can imagine. What are YOU going to do about it?" While challenging the status quo is true of many forms of music, rap mu...

Show Choir Competition judges are/can be picked with a bias against some choirs.

soccergamer92
forensics

First off, let me say that this shouldn't turn into a very personal debate. I'm just trying to see both sides of this story. Also, my main source for my statements is this fall's Central Crossing HS Show Choir Competition in Grove City, OH. In favor of the topic, I bring forth 3 contentions: 1. Time slot placement of choirs "blinds" the judges of equally judging groups. Let's say we have a good, large and loud group performing at 1:00 PM, and we have a smaller yet equally good group at...

People shouldn't judge music on genre alone.

jordan.leckband
wingnut2280

There are many, many talented musicians in every genre. Whether it is pop, rap, R&B, rock, indie, jazz, etc; there are great musicians. Of course, there are the not-so-good musicians as well, but more times than less, the less popular or less talented musicians tend to be spelled out of the genre than the more popular or more talented ones. For instance, when it comes to the saxophone in general, more people think of Kenny G than they think of Ornette Coleman. When it comes to bassists, people k...
