The death penalty should be abolished

I am pleased to be debating Clinton Wilcox. I challenge him to a debate on whether or not the death penalty should be abolished. I am going to make the case that it should based on two main reasons. 1. The Death Penalty has killed innocent people and will always carry that possibility. Since 1973 there have been 138 exonerations of people on death row. Now admittedly this is small number, however it still brings up an ethical question about the death penalty. "Is killing the guilty wor...

The Death Penalty Should Be Used In Certain Cases

Resolved: The death penalty should be used in certain cases There are many cases in which the death penalty is just and should be used. For example, if a man is proven that, without a doubt, he killed another man, that murderer should be killed. While it would be profitable to use the people in prison to do labor, the prisoner should at least be given the option between death and working in prison for the rest of his life. The Death Penalty

First round whatever you want, open with your own arguments. I saw some people discussing this earlier and thought someone would at least consider trying to change my mind. I think the death penalty, or capital punishment, should not exist. Pro will obviously be arguing to keep the death penalty where it is already in place, or implement it in more regions. Please no semantics. Good luck!...

I am definitely against the death penalty, it's barbaric and inhumane. First off, lets say there is a scenario where someone is completely guilty of first degree murder. Would killing this person make us look any better than they do? What are we demonstrating to our children, that it's okay to take the life of another human being because they did something bad? It is understandable that the threat of the death penalty is mostly in line to scare people into not attempting murder, but that...

You say imprisonment is the best route to take, but the death penalty is for INHUMANE crimes. I'm sorry but if it is unjustly to be put to death for murdering, raping, spying, terrorizing; how are those not inhumane as well? Also in prison, prisoners can access books, television, calling and visiting their loved ones, better health coverage than most unemployed Americans and three meals a day. Yes, what a punishment that is....

Using the Threat of the Death Penalty to Ensure a Guilty Plea is Ok

One common argument for the continuing existence of the Death Penalty is the idea that lawyers can threaten to pursue the Death Penalty, and thus scare the defendant into pleading guilty to a life sentence (or other lesser sentence) instead. I believe that this violates the intentions of our law system, and this argument should not be considered in a Death Penalty debate. <...

Death penalty is often advocated with the debate that by killing felons, the government would prevent future killers from killing or other people committing heinous crimes. It can also prevent re-attempting to do a crime. It is obvious that those who are executed cannot carry out future crimes. Humankind has consistently used punishment to unnerve future offenders from illegal activity. Since humankind has the topmost significance in deterring murder or other heinous crimes, it should practic...
