Capital punishment should be abolished in the United States

phantom

I am a bored man.

Please only accept if you have won 10 or more debates.

Too the voters! Please only vote on arguments! Do not vote on sources, conduct or grammar. If one paricipant performs poorly in those catagories that will take away from his arguments, but do not give either side those points. In accepting this debate my opponent is required to agree with this rule.

Libertarians should support Romney

RoyLatham
Microsuck

This debate is whether libertarians should support Mitt Romney in the upcoming U.S. presidential election rather than support a third party candidate such as Gary Johnson. Supporting President Obama is ruled out for this debate.

The right of third party candidates to run for office and of voters to vote for them is not questioned. The debate presumes that libertarians want to have libertarian views, as generally espoused by Ron Paul or Gary Johnson (per

Margaret Thatcher was a Great Person

Jegory
goldman

This is a debate for whether or not Margaret Thatcher, British Prime Minister from 1979-1990, was a great person. Some quick definitions: GREAT: Inspiring; famous BUT not necessarily popular or "good" I'll just point that out again; this is not a debate about whether she was well liked or a "good" person, but about whether she was great or not. Therefore this debate will not discuss her political ideals but her as a person. Round 1: Opening Statements Round 2: Argument, no rebuttals R...

DDO OT Semifinals: Jury Nullification

royalpaladin
imabench

Resolved: In the United States, the principle of jury nullification is a just check on government. Imabench is the pro for this debate, which is part of the DDO Official Tournament. Imabench must present his case in the first round, but may not present any arguments in the final round in order to maintain round balance. Imabench also must present definitions in the first round, but I reserve the right to challenge them in my first speech, which will be presented in the second round. Rules 1...

Should the pledge of allegiance continue to be said after already being said once?

Jobbo56
1Historygenius

Hello all. This is my first debate on this website, and I would appreciate it if someone would challenge me. My rules are: arguments must be legible and coherent. I will start off with that if any legal U.S. citizen has already pledged their allegiance, why should they be asked to again? If an action is done, there is no point in redoing said action; with the exception of said action being previously revoked....

"No prisoner should have the vote"

sardobi
G131994

I will be arguing against the motion that no prisoner should be allowed to vote. Some key terms; "The vote" - the right to political, democratic representation. Be warned, this debate will be fairly Anglo-centric; bear this in mind before accepting it. "Prisoner" - a person tried and found guilty of a crime, to whom prison time is conferred. "No prisoner" implies an absolute blanket ban on voting; the pro position must argue for this, but the con position is not an argument for every prisone...

Marijuana Should Be Legalized

ufcryan
Beta

I would argue that marijuana, and probably some additional drugs, should be legalized because legalizing them would create more benefits than keeping them illegal has. I am not arguing for the complete legalization of marijuana, but rather the regulated use of it. My opponent: Round 1) acceptance & arguments 2) arguments/rebuttals 3) arguments/rebuttals 4) rhetorical statement of choosing. Me: Round 1) terms and conditions 2) arguments/rebuttals 3) arguments/rebuttals 4) concl...

In terms of quality of life, a flat tax places an unfair, substantially heavier burden on the poor.

KroneckerDelta
Beginner

This is mostly a hypothetical debate. However, I will present numbers which Con is more than welcome to question.

In this debate we will be looking at relatively modern Western Societies and specifically the United States (although I think this would easily apply to modern European countries such as the UK, France, Germany, etc.). This stipulation is particularly important when defining the minimum cost of living (since one could say that in 3rd world countries the cost of living...

The right to life ought carry greater legal weight than the right to free exercise of religion

brian_eggleston
Maurice

Imagine it's your 9th birthday and your Mummy and Daddy take you to the zoo as a special treat.

You have had a lovely morning gasping at the huge elephants, laughing at the funny monkeys and stroking the cute little meerkats when all of a sudden a zookeeper runs towards you and shrieks: "Look out! The lions have escaped and they are heading this way!"

With that, you turn and run but you can't keep up with your Mummy and Daddy and moments later a lion pounces on you fro...
