One can have morals without God

Robikan
MrCarroll

Many religious people have claimed that without divine authority, there is nothing on which to base morals. I will be arguing against this position, and offering other foundations for morality. To be sure that I am clear on my opponent's position, I will allow him to make the first argument....

Naturalism provides a more plausible explanation for objective morality than God.

DakotaKrafick
phantom

For the purposes of this debate, objective morality is assumed to exist (my opponent and I agree they do). I will be arguing objective morality is more plausibly explained through naturalism. Phantom will be arguing that objective morality is more plausibly explained through God.

The Problem of Hell Redux

popculturepooka
THEBOMB

Introduction

I have already done one debate on this subject but I hope to tackle this issue again. [1]

To reiterate, my position is that the existence of hell - conceived of as eternal, conscious torment (e.g. the "traditional" doctrine of hell) - is, in all likelihood, incompatible with the existence of a God who is conceived of as perfectly good (e.g. just, merciful, loving, etc), powerful, and wise....

Secular Society Amounts to Statism

Jordeef
Danielle

If our government ever comes to the place where we renounce our accountability to God, we will cease to have basic human rights. The only reference point that we can rely on for the rights of Life, Libery, and the Pursuit of Happiness is God, and in a secular society, the only god would be man and all of his faults. In this society we would no longer be subject to the immutable God (even if just in our minds), but instead to the selfish whims of man.. In a state of anarchy, an ambitious...

Theoretically the past will exactly repeat itself.

Willoweed
drafterman

So basically my position is that some time in the future we will all live these lifes again without a single change. So for example in the future I will be sitting at this computer typing the exact same thing on the exact same day with not a single difference (except for the fact that time has elapsed). I will let my opponent first accept the challenge and then I will make my argument....
