Sonnet Challenge

Chrysippus
Danielle

There have been many, many "rap battles" on this site; I thought it'd make a nice change to have something more classical. In this debate, each opponent will attempt to make a sonnet based on his choice of one of four topics his opponent provides. The form is: abab, cdcd, efef, gg Ten syllables each line; some leeway in counting is permitted (e.g. "count'd" for "counted"), but if a debater relies too heavily on such tricks the S/G points should e taken away. In the first round, I ask...

Shakespeare's works should be abridged and enhanced to make them more enjoyable

brian_eggleston
Lickdafoot

Shakespeare may have written some quite good plays, but few would disagree that most of them are far too long and boring. That’s why they should be edited and spiced up a bit at the same time. Here is an example of what I have in mind: Romeo &...

Pokemon is Better Than Yu-Gi-Oh

cheesedingo1
xxxallyssarulezxxx

First of all, this is a fun debate not to be taken too seriosly but I want to have a good debate nontheless. And I am supportting the affirmative. Ok, so Pokemon is better because of the franchise it has created. It has had over ten successful years and has appealed to many kids and even adults more so than any other game about anime battling monsters. It has cards, tv shows, posters, and most popular, the games. Being able to create your own team to what you prefer and able to endure on a long...

Learning to play percussion well is as hard if not harder than learing to play another instrument.

SandlasJuagas
nrw

I am a percussionist and have recently had someone tell me that percussion is the easiest section in the band to play in. I was very appalled by this and told him that he was dead wrong. For one, percussion covers multiple instruments, including snare, timpani, xylophone, and other auxiliary instruments. Not only do the xylophone and timpani require you to be able to read music in both the treble and base clef, the snare requires you to be able to play complicated rhythms that one would not norm...

The Government Should Not Fund The Arts

Phil
nypuller

The US Government, or any government for that matter, should not be in the business of funding the art industry. For the same reason the government shouldn't fund gas companies or stock brokers, artists should have to prove their worth in the marketplace. Professional artists choose their job like the rest of us (unless you live in a socialistic country). Artists know exactly what the salary and risk is before they choose their profession. The government should not take someone else's hard ea...

Rap music of the "gangsta" variety is degrading our society

Kristallo
clsmooth

I am not in favor of rap music and the gang culture that has emerged hand in hand with it. The true purpose of rap does not seem to be to create anything of beauty but instead to challenge, indeed, to pick a fight with the status quo of American society. In other words, it declares "we [i.e. the rappers] are going to say the most provoking things towards the status quo that we can imagine. What are YOU going to do about it?" While challenging the status quo is true of many forms of music, rap mu...

Middle School Chorus is harder than Middle School band.

jgirl247
maymay43210

Middle School Chorus is harder than Middle School Band because according to most middle school chorus teachers must teach their student musical theory, history, vocal technique, vocal production, choral technique, expressiveness, dynamics, tempo, musical terms, performance, musical literacy, rhythm, pitch, melody, harmony, score study, and analysis. That is lot to learn compared to what band has to learn. This is multi tasking, tempo, musical terms, rhythm, score study, and analysis. Chorus lear...
