Does Hirsch"s theory of pedagogy trump Freire"s?

elimay
jnolf

Hirsch has the right idea about education. Without world knowledge, or cultural literacy as he refers to it, a person cannot develop adequate reading or writing skills. There is concrete evidence from the observations of reading specialists that support this claim: "Professor....Chall." (1.3) The effects of a lack of cultural literacy are already evident in today's world. Hirsch talks about how people today cannot communicate well. They struggle with conveying their ideas and thoughts both on pa...

Is the Banking Concept of Education Opressive?

riosk1
DaveCandia

I am a believer that the Banking Concept of Education is more opressive than it is helpful. I feel that education has become more of a chore than it does a career for most educators simply just go through the motions of teaching rather than actually teaching. Freire states in his writing "Education thus becomes an act of depositing, in which the students are the depositories and the teacher is the depositor. Instead of communicating, the teacher issues communiqu"s and makes deposits which the st...

Is the banking concept of education oppressive?

The banking concept of education is not oppressive because, the students ought to think for themselves. When the student communicates in the real world the student develops his/her thoughts. This way they can relate real world experience to their learning experience. The banking concept of education gives student the basic knowledge, students need to go out in the real world and make a living and name for themselves. The way they interpret what is being taught to them through the "Banking Concept"...

The banking concept of education is oppressive.

"Education thus becomes an act depositing, in which the students are the depositories and the teacher is the depositor. Instead of communicating, the teacher issues communiques and makes deposits which the students patiently receive, memorize, and repeat. This is the "banking" concept of education, which the scope of action allowed the students extends only as far as receiving, filing, and storing the deposits."...

Is the banking concept of education oppressive?

steph442

The banking concept of education is oppressive because if the education system were helping students learn and process the information taught to them, one third of the population wouldn't practically be illiterate. Children need to be literate and learn in a non-oppressive education because students will use their literacy skills everyday. These skills will also lead to better communication, locally and nationally. Hirsch writes about this in his "Literacy and Cultural Literacy: The Decline Of L...

Hirsch's Method of Pedagogy Trumps Freire's

moliveira8264
Jaygee

Pedagogy is the method and practice of teaching. Based on this definition, Hirsch"s traditional, narrative approach or "banking system" of education trumps Freire"s more progressive (problem-posing) views. A modern society functions most effectively with a system of roads, bridges, tunnels, highways, etc. used to transport goods. Likewise, a modern society functions most effectively when a cultural and intellectual infrastructure is in place and is used to transfer ideas. Hirsch"s theory of edu...

It is Logically Impossible that a Maximally Great Being Exists.

Magicr
RyuuKyuzo

It is logically impossible that a maximally great being exists.

Just a few definitions:

Maximally great being (MGB)- A being greater than all other conceivable beings. A MGB is attributed omnipotence, omniscience, perfect moral goodness, and being the necessary creator of the Universe. Note, however, that this being must be subject to the laws of logic for the purposes of this discussion. The MGB we are discussing could not, for instan...

Needs only exist within the context of a desire.

This debate is designed to determine whether or not there is such thing as a need outside of the context of a want. I will be arguing that such a thing is not logically possible. 1. First round-acceptance 2. Second round-opening arguments 3. Third round- closing arguments...

There is no point in doing anything.

Let's face it, there is no "in the long run." As John Maynard Keynes said, "In the long run, we are all dead." So why make an impression on a crowd that will, in the long run, die out? This website won't remain on the web. Civilization will inevitably die off, power will be lost, the world will explode. This very argument won't be remembered as, "The discussion that saved the universe!" Maybe there is some self-fulfillment involved, but, as I have stated many times, we will all be dead. That fee...
