A Flat Tax is a good idea.

Oh, and maybe next time we can actually have a longer debate with actual arguing. My previous post was longer then the whole debate.

To what Drumbum said, utilitarianism is a foolish philosophy. While it could be the ideal future of our world, it isnt going to happen. However, utilitarianism advocates one of the most horrible possibilities that I can imagine. A state ruled by a tyrannical majority. If the greatest good for the greatest # (util.) should be upheld, then it would be ideal for the lower 50.0000000001% of Americans to make laws to literaly steal all of the money from the remaining minority. It can also advocate as radical an idea as slavery. If 1000 white people and 999 black people exist, it is the greatest good for the greatest number to enslave the minority.

GKH is right, WHy should a more successful person have to pay the bills of those who arent as successful. the current progressive tax is an infringment on the wonderful thing that we know as capitalism. equal taxation is the only truly rightous way to tax, anything else denies success, and condemns it, and paves the way fro a socialistic or communistic state.

All Taxes are oppressive in nature. Taxes are forced, and not voluntary.

Well even though the debate is over while you will strive to make that much some simply cant so why punish those people. Lets start thinking about everyone instead of just ourselves

Why should one get punished for making more money than others. My goal is to work hard to make one million/yr not ten grand/yr. The flat tax makes the most sense, people need to start striving for more and stop wanting everyone else to pay there bills.

well take this example

Billy makes 10,000 dollars a year

Bill and Sue make 100,000 a year jointly

and

William and Susan make 1,000,000 a year.

so say they get taxed 15% 20% and 30% respectively (this isn't quite accurate but it is close enough for this

15% of 10,000 is 1,500 10,000- 1,500 = 8,500 for Billy
20% of 100,000 is 20,000 100g - 20g = 80,000 for Bill and Sue

30% of 1mil is 300,000 1mil - 300g = 700,000 for William and Susan

now if it was a flat 22.5% (halfway between 15 and 30)

22.5% of 10,000 is 2,250 total 7,750 as opposed to 8,500
22.5% of 100g is 22,500 total 77,500 as opposed to 80,000
22.5% of 1mil is 225,000 total 775,000 as opposed to 700,000

Utilitarianism- do what accomplishes the most good for the most people. Lower and middle class occupy 98% of the United states.
