Who is overall more athletic: A wrestler, or a basketball player? Many aspects of each sport requires great athletic ability; although it may be comparing apples to oranges, it is still a good topic. My wrestling and basketball friends have been having this debate for a very long time. We just want some input from each side and/or a neutral source. Thanks!

The definition of 'athletic' is:
Adjective
1. Of or relating to athletes or athletics: "athletic events"; "an athletic club".
2. Physically strong, fit, and active: "big, muscular, athletic boys".

The term athletic suggests that the person has high scores in a number of skill and heath related fitness components, also, an athletic person is generally thought of to have the somatotype of a meso/ectomorph - a basketball player; where as a wrestler would have the optimum weight in the endomorph category, meaning that body condition wise the basketball player is more athletic.

A better term, which would result in a difficult debate would be which one is 'fitter'.
Obviously this arguement is vague as I am unsure what level your friends participate at, for example an elite wrestler would be more athletic than a foundation basketball player.

Athleticism is measures of the following:
Speed (Acceleration and Top End Speed)
Agility (Change of Direction)
Power (Vertical and/or Linear)
Strength (Upper Body, Lower Body, Total Body)
Plyometric Abilities (Elasticity & Rate of Force Development)
Fitness (which we will discuss in another section)
therefore a basketball player would generally be more 'Athletic' than a wrestler, depending on the circumstances.
