1. Con may debate from either a pro-life or pro-choice position but must state that going in.

2. I will be arguing that whether a government should allow abortion or not should depend on its population needs going into the future. Hence, countries with shrinking populations should ban abortion, countries with rapidly increasing populations should legalize it, even subsidize or require it depending on how bad the situation is.

I am supporting pro-life and I believe that abortion is wrong. Abortion is not just a way of keeping the population down, it is infanticide. If someone killed a child after it was born that person would be classed a murderer no matter what. Yet abortion is taken so lightly. If there was a policy that children should be killed after birth based on population growth then no one in their right mind would accept that, even if the population growth was at the limit.

Abortion can only be used in few circumstances such as the life of the mother or if the mother was raped and is unable to bring up a child on her own and that is when there is no other resort. Life is precious, we can't just decide that: there are too many women becoming pregnant, we need to let a few get killed off. I mean what did the child do? Just because the number of people in one place is increasing, does an innocent child need to be killed? That child could have had a good life and become something in life and benefit humanity.

As humans, I don't think we have the right to kill children for any reason. Also abortion is a painful process for the child, so not only does it kill the innocent babe, it causes it to have a painful death. If we compare this to criminals who are given painless injections to be put to death. This is not fair, the innocent one feels pain while the criminal feels none?

I finish by concluding that human life is special and innocent children should not be killed because of something they had no control over. Abortion is murder and infanticide, in fact the person who does abortion should be killed for killing an innocent soul. If we don't consider it alright to kill children after birth then why the difference before birth? Abortion should only be used a last resort in life and death situations. Them children are innocent and have a right to live.

Human Survival v. Abstract Notions of Morality

Morality itself is a concept we only have because it developed through the course of human evolution and hence should be considered subordinate to the needs of human survival. But Con says:

"If there was a policy that children should be killed after birth based on population growth then no one in their right mind would accept that, even if the population growth was at the limit."

While I find the idea of infanticide revolting I wouldn't die just to avoid a feeling of revoltingness. We shouldn't sacrifice the human race or even a group of people(say in the case where if we don't do it there will be a famine) for the sake of obeying feelings which are just reflexes/habits in response to stimuli and don't have any inherent value or meaning beyond that.

Rebuttal

"That child could have had a good life and become something in life and benefit humanity."

Or grew up to be the next Hitler.

A Fetus is not a child

A child is out of the womb, is someone you can interact with in some way. The only person who can interact with the fetus is the mom. It doesn't effect anyone in any way except arguably the fetus to have an abortion. Arguably infanticide doesn't effect me either since I'm not an infant, but the right to life wisely begins at birth in order to avoid a slippery slope.

No Right to Life does not mean there is a Right to choose

However, just as there is no good reason to accord a fetus the right to life there is also no good reason to accord a woman the right to choose other than that that's convenient for her. So when abortion becomes too much for the population to handle and we need more people going forward abortion should be illegal.
