You obviously do not know much about abortion. Only .003% of abortions happen because of rape and incest. another 3% of abortion happens because the delivery of the baby will affect the woman's health. There is no excuse for over 80% of abortions that happen.
You also probably don't know what abortion is. You might know the concept of abortion, which is obvious, but abortions are horrible. The main surgical procedures are the first, where the surgeon goes into the vaginal canal and cut the babies head off, then into another portion and the baby is delivered. Another type is a late-term abortion called partial birth abortions where only the the baby is pulled out feet first except for the head which is still in the mothers vaginal canal. Then a long tube is stabbed into the head of the baby, and a very powerful suction device is used to suck the brain out of the baby's skull, collapsing the skull of the baby and the baby slips out of the womb, with no brain and a collapsed skull. Another type is when a long needle into the uterus without touching the baby. The amniotic fluid, which the baby's life depends upon, is removed and replaced with a strong saline solution, burning the baby inside the womb and then the baby is delivered. How sweet. Not! This is what you stand up for and it is horrific! Many people argue," Harambe the Gorilla from Cincinnati Zoo was doing nothing wrong, and he was shot dead!" You are arguing for the life of a gorilla rather than the life of babies being aborted. This is all I have to say for now.

Thank you Con for your kind invitation.

I will begin by a rebuttal to your points, followed by my argument.

But first of all, you said that I "obviously do not know much about abortion". However, with all due respect, based on your first argument, it doesn't seem like you do either:

1. "Only .003% of abortions happen because of rape and incest"

This is incorrect. Over 1% of abortions are actually carried out because of rape and incest [1] and although not a huge amount, it is still significantly greater than what your initial estimation was.

2. "The main surgical procedures are the first, where the surgeon goes into the vaginal canal and cut the babies head off, then into another portion and the baby is delivered."

You seem to believe that abortion can only physically harm the unborn baby in the most revolting way possible. However, you have only mentioned a few types of abortion that exist today- there are of course many better alternatives. For example, most women choose medical abortion which is safe and does not cause pain to the baby. A medical abortion involves taking medication to end the pregnancy. It can be used at any stage of pregnancy and involves the initial intake of mifepristone. This stops the production of hormones that allow the pregnancy to continue. After, prostaglandin is taken, this will either be a tablet taken by mouth, or a pessary put inside the vagina [2]. The baby is later, safely removed from the body.

3. "...partial birth abortions, where only the the baby is pulled out feet first except for the head which is still in the mothers vaginal canal. Then a long tube is stabbed into the head of the baby, and a very powerful suction device is used to suck the brain out of the baby's skull, collapsing the skull of the baby and the baby slips out of the womb, with no brain and a collapsed skull."

I'm not sure if you're aware of this but partial abortions have been federally banned in the United States (Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act of 2003) as well as in many other countries [3] so I really do not see the point you're making.

4. "...people argue," Harambe the Gorilla from Cincinnati Zoo was doing nothing wrong, and he was shot dead!" You are arguing for the life of a gorilla rather than the life of babies being aborted."

Firstly, I do not see the reason for your random 'analogy' because this is in fact my first argument post and I did not mention 'Harambe' the gorilla at all. Also, I think you have negated the point of this debate.

Argument:

I believe that abortion should be legal for many reasons. First of all, well-timed pregnancies are crucial to give children a better and healthier start in life. Wanted pregnancies welcome the child into life both financially and emotionally. Also, motherhood should be taken seriously. Parenting is not a joke and it takes at least eighteen years of attention, care, social support, money, persistence and many other factors. So therefore, the idea that women should simply go with it when they find themselves pregnant after a one-night-stand, rape or even a broken condom is completely absurd.

You said "This is what you stand up for and it is horrific!" Well I think everybody would agree that not wanting to have a baby simply because you're not ready or capable of giving that child the best life possible is far from "horrific", it's actually very understandable.

Finally, Dr. Malcom Watts, writing a pro-abortion piece for the California Medical Association said:
"..it has been necessary to separate the idea of abortion from the idea of killing, which continues to be socially abhorrent. The result has been a curious avoidance of the scientific fact, which everyone really knows, that human life begins at conception and is continuous until death." [4]

I don't think any more needs to be said.

Thank you for reading and I beg you to oppose.

Reasons for voting decision: Conduct goes to pro due to forfeit. Spelling and grammar will be tied. Pro had more convincing arguments due to the fact he refuted all of Con's arguments; in addition Con used non-factual points. Pro was the only one to state sources, so Pro will get those points.
