I believe that addiction is mental, it can be controlled. When people are addicted to things like tobacco and gambling, all I have is pity for them. People don't realize that they can stop whenever they want, they just don't. They have fun doing them, or have just gotten used to and don't feel like stopping.

Addiction can not always be controlled. You may see a doctor or therapist to help you get rid of the addiction but it does not always work. Take smoking for example, there is many ads of nicotine gum. It says that it will get rid of the craving but it does not always work.

Of course it doesn't work, because it isn't doing anything. there isn't any addiction to break. it is just putting more nicotine into your body. It is a craving, when you crave a piece of chocolate cake do you die if you don't get it? Same goes for smoking, the only "cold turkey" you are gonna feel is the fact that you want it. Take a 17 year old kid. He wants to have his first time, he wants to lose his virginity. He isn't gonna die if he doesn't have sex, he just wants to, he wants to know what it feels like.

When you have a situation where someone is addicted to smoking cigarettes, than you have to look at the bigger picture. They are the ones that started smoking so they can stop just as easy.

addiction in a simple explanation is youyr brain trying to create patterns even if it is unessasary or harmful. the human brain loves patterns and insists that you keep them thus forming a habit. when the action that the habit induces occures the brain releses chemicals to make it feel good. artificial chemicals made to mimic this are put into drugs alchol and cigeretts causing your brain to be easily hooked on them. so it is more human anatomey then the proposed "mental" but you are on the right track. because the brain is flawed it allows habits to be broken but not easily.
