Hi all,

Since the very dawn of marketing, advertising has played a crucial role in civilization, as we know it. In the business world, it is often said "advertising is a necessary evil". I have read that the spending in 2013 reached an all-time high with 500 billion dollars. It is expected that this trend will continue and spending will rise up to 5,8% in 2015 and 2016. From this one might conclude that advertising is needed by companies.

I found myself wondering if all of this really is necessary. Imagine a world without advertising and all aspects that would come with it. What effect would that have on the economy? What effect would it have on people's thoughts and perspectives?
I will be writing a report on this topic and I am very interested in your opinion. Therefore I have create the following statement:

Advertising, in general, is necessary in today"s society.

What are your thoughts on this?

If you don't eat, you die. If a business doesn't make good enough products that are aesthetically pleasing, it dies.

If a company doesn't advertise, it doesn't die, it merely struggles more than most. Thus, advertising is not necessary.

I understand your point. However, what if none of the world's companies would advertise?
baus

Con

Then that would only further my case against the necessity of it.

That is interesting, could you explain why you think so?

Some argue that it is very necessary for a good economy many more aspects.
baus

Con

It is convenient but not necessary.

Necessity indicates an inability to cope without it. corporations such as Rolls Royce and Krispy Kreme never advertised the brand, in fact I don't think Starbucks does either. They develop via cult branding (peer pressure).

Starbucks actually does a lot of advertising, just not often on television. However, I understand your point.
Thank you for participating in this debate.

The forum does not seem to be a place many people are active, therefore i chose to create a debate Flipz.

Does that mean you believe advertising is unnecessary Cold-Mind?

And thank you for the tip Blade-of-Truth!

If you are writing a report on this topic, I would suggest watching the film "Branded". You can find it on Netflix if you have that. It is related exactly to advertising and the effects it has on people's thoughts and perspectives. Fascinating film to be honest.

Promoting something you want people to like is not bad. Problem is in lying and problem is pushing advertisements where they don't belong.

Reasons for voting decision: Conduct - Tie, both practiced good conduct. S & G - Tie, neither committed any major mistakes in this regard. Sources - Tie, neither shared sources. Arguments - Con. Pro posed a question, and Con provided a response. More importantly, Pro accepted the answers Con provided by the end of the debate. Instead of really creating any arguments, this was more of a Q & A. Considering that Pro thanked Con for providing answers, I would feel it appropriate awarding Con arguments points. Advice for Pro would be to take questions into the Forum or Opinion section. It's hard to win a debate when you do nothing but ask questions. Regardless, this was an enjoyable and easy read. I wish you both well in your future pursuits!!

Reasons for voting decision: This wasn't a debate but at least con argued for his side. Pro conceded at the end as well.

Reasons for voting decision: Not really a debate, since Pro never established a case or argued it. Seemed like he just wanted to canvas someone for their negative perspective. I'd suggest doing something like this in the forums rather than making it into a debate, unless you mean to argue a side.
