Altair was, in fact, a more effective assassin than Ezio.

Fist of all, I aknowledge that both Ezio and Altair were extremely skilled, and that there is no reason for them to fight and thus show us honestly who is better. Plus they did not live in the same time period. Now, to my points:

1.) Altair was trained from birth. Ezio became an assassin when he was already an adult, though it is true his childhood mischief taught him skills of an assassin, and he had assassin blood, Altair also had assassin blood, and was learning to hone and perfect his abilities from birth.

2.) Altair did make a major mistake, yes, and that mistake cost him his rank and should have cost him his life. However, he learned from that mistake. Not just how to follow the creed, but he unlocked the true meaning and wisdom of the creed after his nine assassinations. He had reached "enlightenment", the true mastery of himself and his creed. Ezio did not display this "enlightenment" until Revelations, when he was in his late 50's, early 60's. Altair reached "enlightenment" in his late 20's, early 30's.

3.) Altair proved to be the only being who could use the apple extensively and retain his sanity. Ezio did not go mad from his apple, but nor did he study it extensively. All equipment Ezio has that Altair didn't when we saw him in Assassin's Creed 1, Altair invented.

4.)Altair more than likely could swim, and one could attribute gameplay flaws as simply the limitations of the early Animus. I can understand why someone would disagree on this point, but the fact is that even if Altair couldn't swim, it was not particularly necessary as water was rarely, if ever, nearby during his assassinations. Ezio was around water much more, thus it makes sense he would know how to swim. This argument is over the most EFFECTIVE assassin, and for Altair swimming was needed for nothing, the only times he touched water was from player carelessness, aka Altair's carelessness, which, since he was desynchronized, never happened.

5.) Altair, (after his "enlightenment") never let emotions cloud his judgement. He was in a zen-like state, focusing on the mission and nothing else. The ONLY time his emotions bested him was when his love and wife Maria was slain by a traitor. Ezio, on the other hand, constantly flirted with the ladies, and NOT as part of the mission but purely as his lack of control over his emotions. The final proof of Ezio's lack of control over his emotions was when he disrespected the commander in the beginning of Revelations. He said, and I quote, in Italian, "rest in peace, bastard." Death was a sacred thing to assassins, and the vicim always had the right to die with swiftness and respect, no matter their crimes in life. Altair understood this in his early years, respecting the dead of even his most hated enemies. Ezio had failed to learn this lesson in Revelations, which takes place when Ezio is quite old.

6.) My final point in this round, is swordsmanship. The topic is not "who is the better fighter", but one could argue that the ability to be an effective assassin ultimately boils down to one's ability to weild a blade. Altair was, as I've said, raised from birth. His sword was legend, crafted of such high skill that even years later, assassins in Italy (Ezio) still desired to obtain and use Altair's legendary weapon. Altair used nothing but his blade to storm the library of Masyaf and defeat Robert De'Sabe and several templars. This was before he had invented other weapons, so Altair had his blades and his blades alone. Altair was feared and respected. Ezio was also an unbelievable swordsman, and he was competent with a sword the first time he wore his father's robes. But his skills were mediocre, and he needed additional training from his uncle to become deadly and confident. Ezio also had the help of guilds which Altair didn't, and equipment Altair hadn't invented yet. Ezio also needed heavier armor that needed to be repaired fairly often, Altair only wore light protection and never recieved a wound other than that of his master, wheras Ezio was wounded multiple times.

This concludes my argument for why Altair was a more effective assassin than Ezio, despite Ezio being amazing in his own right. I look forward to anyone's arguments.

I have to partially agree that Altair is completely awesome, but Ezio can climb a lot faster thus making him a better asssasin.

ezio Ezio learned all the skills need in a few years compared to altair. But they are both amazing.
Ezio showed kindness to all the targets in creed 2 and brotherhood. By saying things like: I"m sorry it had to come to this. I take no pleasure in claiming your life in assassin"s creed 2.
Ezio never put himself above others after ac 2 He also says faith in humanity lies at the heart of the creed in brotherhood and spent years training assassins to fight for freedom, like he says in his little speeches.
Altair only made the weapons the apple told him how as he says before killing abos. "I have learned many things from the apple of the past and the future"let me show you."
Altair burned his master"s body because of fear(emotion) this also show disrespect to his target and when he killed an innocent in the first game"then drew attention to himself due to pride and lost many allies. What do you call that?
Ezio killed the commander with speed and respect. He didn"t call him a hound and old. Even near death the man wanted more power not knowledge from the books.

Ezio wanted to get rid of the temptation the apple gave to humans he believed as altair did, "no man is worthy."
Altair"s sword was a gift to the players"he was remembered because of his reform from a self-centered jerk to a true assassin. Ezio fought through all the Templars on ac2 with only the sword, hidden blade, throwing knives, nothing else was needed.
Altair trained from birth to use his blade, ezio learned it in a few years. Altair had other assassins tell him things at the hideouts and on the streets. You don"t need to fix armor that"s just to allow you to customize ezio another improvement like not dying from falling into water.
Ezio was wounded from rocks and knife stabs same as altair he didn"t wear armor to blend in to student crowds. Altair got hit with arrows and swords but the game had health regeneration not damaged armor.
A lot of your claims were due to the techs ability to improv
