One main long term effect of anabolic steroid use is liver cancer. Liver damage from anabolic steroids can cause a condition call cholestasis. Anabolic steroids can cause increased levels of "HDL" or good cholesterol. Too much of anything is unhealthy even it"s good for you. Not only will HDL levels increase but LDL or bad cholesterol will increase which is very unhealthy to the body.
One benefit of steroid use is the amount of Increased Muscle Strength it provides a persons body with. Both scientifically and anecdotally, it is known that steroids are used as a quicker way to enhance your muscle strength. There have been studies shown by Rogerston and colleagues that testosterone enanthate, a type of testosterone that is most commonly used, increased bench press ability and performance in cycling when the subject was healthy. Typically, when working out, it can take anywhere from 6-12 weeks to get the same results steroids give you in 3 weeks.
Another reason to not use anabolic steroid use is that it is banned in almost every sport. In 1989 Chris Washburn player of the NBA, was banned for test positive on three drug tests. One drug to say to be found was steroids. Also Ryan Braun was banned an entire season on December 10, 2011 also for testing positive for anabolic steroids. During the height of Marion Jones career (an Olympian) she had won five gold medals, then was stripped of her title because she was caught using steroids.
