According to United Press International Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan divulged from the corse and were unable to find the island that they had to refuel on. When they couldn't find the island, they continued looking but they ran out of gas first and crashed into the Pacific Ocean.
They crashed into the ocean swam to shore then got captured. They got away and got back to the U.S. They got fake identities and lived out their lives.
