My name is Thomas and I live in the United States of America.
I recentley met with my guidance counceler about my scheduling for next year. In my state, you must have 4 years of English (Language arts which includes reading and writing), 3 years of math, 3 years of science, 2 years of physical education, and 3 years of history/social studies.

I have always wondered how children and teens in Europe or other parts of the world conduct education. I would also like to debate on this subject.

The pros of our education system include: many job availiabilites, freedom of going to any university within the country, having real world skills as far as math and science, learning about our history and other cultures, and having skill sets for any job.

My points may have some holes considering I got little rest last night so please bare with me.

I would like to note I am devil's advocating this debate -- I disagree with both sides and believe American education needs complete overhaul.

Although my opponent mentions many benefits to the American systems, there are many downsides too. Studies being conducted find children with large amounts of homework do worse on tests -- and American teachers have been assigning more and more homework to their children. Studies indicate that homework does not make students achieve more, and when too much homework is applied children actually do worse [1].

Finnish schools have done the opposite. Less school time, no homework, long breaks, and free lunches. These new unorthodox policies have actually made these schools, starting at the bottom, rise above the US educational systems [2].

Academic studies have been done in Europe. They find Northern Europe actually has a much better system, and more effective one, then the USA. Some of the reasons include[3]:

1. School vouchers
2. Students are rewarded for hard work (other than grades)
3. The lax system

The European systems outrank America.
