Definitions

You should accept my definitions because I made this resolution. If I opponent accepts this debate, he agrees to all of my definitions and agrees to not contest them.

"An"-the form of "a" before a vowel.

800: the number equal to 8*100

meter: the length of the path travelled by light in vacuum during a time interval of 1 ⁄ 299,792,458 of a second.

race :
a contest of speed, as in running, riding, driving, or sailing.

long: Extending or traveling a relatively great distance.

length: a measure of one dimension that measures distance.

Syllogism

If x length units > y length units, x >y in terms of length

800 meters > 400 meters

Therefore, the resoloution is true.

YAY!

Con

I thank my opponent for this stimulating debate and welcome him to DDO with an open heart and mind.

"If I opponent accepts this debate, he agrees to all of my definitions and agrees to not contest them."

Since I am not "I opponent" and I am also not a "he," I am free to dispute the definitions and contest them.

"Race" is actually a word which describes biological categories within species, as you can see from this wikipedia article:

http://en.wikipedia.org...

Because of this, the rest of the terms defined regarding numbers and lengths are completely nonsensical and do not apply to the real topic at hand.

An 800 meter race clearly does not exist as race itself is an abstract concept so it cannot possibly be longer in terms of length than a 400 meter race because a 400 meter race also does not exist.

Vote Con.

You can't even debate it with semantics.

http://www.thefreedictionary.com...
"1. Sports
a. A competition of speed, as in running or riding.
b. races A series of such competitions held at a specified time on a regular course: a fan of the dog races.
2. An extended competition in which participants struggle like runners to be the winner: the presidential race.
3. Steady or rapid onward movement: the race of time."

You fail at the interpretation part of semantics if you use the wrong definition within the context. So really, using semantics like this detracts from both the conduct and convincing part of the vote.

thanks for the advice whiteandnerdy. You try making a response to this debate with a quickly dwindling 7 minute time limit :D

lol dude, you create a resolution saying 800 is larger than 400 and expect people to no play semantics?

And LK brings up a valid point. I am also not a "he" as was discussed thoroughly in my actual entry in the debate.

You didn't say "my opponent," you said "I opponent." That is clearly not who I am.

Reasons for voting decision: Very clever, but you could have gone in a more logical direction saying that you can measure the distance between times. Like... so-and-so ran the 800 faster than this-person ran the 400.

Reasons for voting decision: hmmm...so a debate that Pro basically made in order to win. Since this resolution was so abusive, Con's semantics is upheld and Con wins.

Reasons for voting decision: Conduct - Pro made a resolution that is essentially: "2+2=4, I win give me debate points now." Con - she found a clever way out of Pro's abusive resolution, and deserves the arguments points for undermining a debate initiated as an auto-win.
