Animals should have basic rights under U.S. law. There is research done by many organizations that show that abusing animals is only a step below abusing children. Also, though animals may not have reason and logic like humans, they do have some degree of emotion and deserve to be treated decently.
In almost every organized religion, studies show that animals are not to be treated poorly.

there are already many laws that provide protection against cruelty to animals. Didn't you watch the Michael Vick case?? My only real opposition to laws against animals would be laws that prohibit consumption of meats. This should be a personal choice and nothing else. Other than that animals already have laws in place to protect them aginst what you are trying to debate. People can already be charged with violating animal cruelty laws just by not feeding their dog enough. If you are trying to say there needs to be stronger penalties than already established please say so. But I must say that most states have already passed laws that have felony-level penalties for animal cruelty

Animals are not humans! They can not have rights. Because a right is a philosophical concept based on the fact that you know you exist and know you can die. Animals are not afraid of dying they are afraid of being chased. They keep coming back to the watering hole and the bones aren't a give-away apparently.

Laws are put in place to protect animals.

These laws only truly protect animals like dogs and cats, because people think they are cute and it isn't normal in our society to eat them.

The regulations put in place to protect farm animals are broken constantly and the people committing these crimes almost never get prosecuted, even if there is hard evidence incriminating the defendent.

I believe it should be someones personal choice to eat another animal but we shouldn't have groups backed by the government that provide the meat if the government isn't willing to ensure that these animals aren't killed in excess and treated inhumanely.

Thanks harlan. Gonovice, you really are having a hard time with this aren't you. I was simply unsure of his stance and wanted clearer terms for the debate. Chill.

Goldspurs your whole argument is basically a question. This debate is completley pointless if your not going to acutally give an argument

Goldspurs and Harlan have a point. THere are laws already on the books. I would clarify your argument.

MArikunin,

Do you mean rights like voting, or not getting beaten. 8?)

Please specify what kinds of rights you are proposing.
