Ape Escape is the greatest game of all time. It was the first and best game to take full advantage of the analog control sticks on the Playstation 1. Also, you can't beat running around with different tools trying to capture tiny, annoying monkeys who are running around trying to avoid you.

First of all, the number of reasons and sub-categories by which people justify selecting their favorite video game is so vast that it is impossible to identify one game for one platform, the greatest game of all time. Subjectivity over what makes a video game "the greatest" will always inevitably exist. Claiming Ape Escape as "the greatest video game of all time" cannot be true because so many different games could be "greater" than it, in different respects. If you can think of one game that has better graphics than Ape Escape, your claim is false. Same goes with if you can identify one game with better gameplay, better online interface, a more popular game, a more strategic game, a more educational game, etc.
My point is - if you can think of any game that MIGHT be better than Ape Escape in ANY category, then Ape Escape is NOT the "greatest game of all time."

Furthermore, I understand your desire to make this debate fun, and I realize that the above argument, even though it wins the debate, is not very fun. So, I will engage in your topic from a different standpoint as well.

Let's think of other games that would be more suited for the title "greatest game of all time."

GoldenEye 007 for the N64? - it basically started the revolution for first-person shooter games that we are in the middle of today with best selling games like the Halo series and Call of Duty

The Original Mario Brothers? - the beginning of the Nintendo empire - all Mario games and characters began with this game - people still go out and buy SNES platforms to play the original game because it is such a classic.

The Madden Series? - probably the most popular sports game out there - people wait in lines at midnight for the next year series to come out- even though they have the game from the previous year at home - the game has built an unbeleiveable fan base, and the game as an impressive online community.

The Halo Series? - probably the most popular first-person shooter today - people obsess over this game, and the online community and gameplay is utterly amazing

The Call of Duty Series? - more for the PC gamer, and now reaching into the ground of Halo with the release of COD4: Modern Warfare, this series has dominated the realistic-shooter/war-theme game category.

These are all examples of potential "greatest games," and reasons why Ape Escape should not be classified as the singluar best game of all time.

Great points.

By your definition of greatest game, though, it isn't really possible to have one, which would make this argument completely meaningless, which I suppose it almost is. But I think there is some weight to the claim of greatest game of all time. I suppose it could be meant different ways though, like most fun to play, or greatest synthesis of all the different video-game aspects.

Ape Escape was released in the U.S. on May 31, 1999. Ape Escape was actually the very first game for Playstation to require the use of the Dual Shock controller, which utilized both the analog controls and the vibration ability of the newly released Dual Shock controllers, released in 1998.

The story of Ape Escape is also really well done, and the whole idea is pretty comic. A monkey gets control of a helmet that makes him very intelligent but also evil, and he gets helmets for other monkeys. He has all the monkeys travel through time in order to fulfill his plot of world domination. The main character has to chase them through time and capture them all. Also, the evil monkey brainwashed the main character's friend to use as his slave, and the main character needs to rescue him. Overall, the plot is very entertaining, and it goes great with the gameplay.

There are numerous gadgets to use, including: Time Net, Stun Club, Water Net, Monkey Radar, Slingshot, Dash Hoop, Propeller, RC Car, and Magic Punch. These all make the gameplay interesting and enjoyable.
There are also several different types of monkeys, an average monkey, one that is good at attacking, one that is super fast, one that has great sight and homing missiles, one that is really good at hiding, and even one with a gun that's crazy. Each monkey has an intelligence helmet that tells whether it is unaware, on alert, or aggressive.
Also, there are even 3 good mini-games that can be unlocked.

This just seems to be o the best put-together game, where the developers thought of everything and did it all excellently. It is the greatest because of the combination of the dual shock, the storyline, the gameplay, the gadgets, the monkeys, and the minigames.

Under my "definition" of greatest game, (although it really isn't a definition), the argument doesn't become meaningless, it just means that Ape Escape is not the "greatest" game because there are probably others that could fulfill that title.

You say it could be seen as different ways - this proves my argument that because of the different interpretations of "greatest" - Ape Escape can never be the greatest game because some game will always be able to fill its holes in one category or another.
As far as the "sythesis" thing goes - the criteria would still have to be defined, so other games would beat out Ape Escape anyways.

-----

With that aside, the other part of the debate.

The Dual Shock Controllers thing - it doesn't matter if this was the first game to totally use them. Games coming out now are newer and use the Dual Shock Controllers better. Madden's gameplay with the analog sticks and vibration is superb.

The story of Ape Escape
Well, first, the story of a game is somewhat limited because once you complete the story, you know what is coming, so the game is no longer as good. Also, there are many other games with debatable amazing stories. The Halo singleplayer, the Call of Duty Series singleplayer (WWII, man!), the Grand Theft Auto game stories are extremely popular, Mario, Zelda, etc., etc.

Gadgets
Some people prefer guns to gadgets - so apply the Halo and Call of Duty Series here. Games like Rachet and Clank also use a lot of gadgets - but that doesn't make it a top of the line game.

Monkeys
Ok, the preferance of character is subjective. But, for fun, I'll argue that the characters being human or human-like is much more popular and makes a game better than games focused on animals. Furthermore - how can you compare monkeys to the Italian Duo of Mario and Luigi - come on.

Mini-Games
3 Mini Games. This doesn't help your cause for Ape Escape, it hurts it. There are plenty of games with better graphics, characters, gameplay, etc. that ALSO have more minigames. I don't think many people look to mini-games for evaluating greatness of video games.

The combination of these things might be alright - however, the game still cannot be considered the greatest. You are ignoring things like legacy and tradition that exist in games that come out yearly. You are also ignoring online play that is pivitol to so many popular games today.

If there is ANY DOUBT that Ape Escape is not better than any game out there,
OR
If there is ANY RISK that ANY GAME is even a slight bit better than Ape Escape.
Then...
A 'Con' vote is automatic.

nrw...
Thank you for making this debate fun as well as smart.
That isn't always done, and very seldom is it done well.
So kudos to you.

oh and for my money, there are few games better than Rock and Roll Racing for the SNES...great music, great game play, fun on 2 player and single player, it even allowed you to upgrade your vehicle...just a spectacular game in all

Other games that might come close (in my personal opinion) are Prince of Persia and God of War...
I hope guitaristofra makes a strong argument for why Ape Escape is so enchanting (if he does make a strong argument I will probably go and find myself the game and try it out).
