Airstrikes are enough to cripple ISIS to a position weak enough that local militias and armies can eventually defeat ISIS. Without ground forces, ISIS will not be totally defeated. However, it is not in the United States' best interest to send in ground forces and complete the job entirely, only to have a new radical group assemble as soon as our troops evacuate. This is what happened in 2011, and how ISIS has grown to power. I believe sending airstrikes allows US "allies" (Kurdish, Syrian rebels) to develop and strategically gain momentum and strength against ISIS.
