I believe the main factor that causes obesity in children are themselves. Parents influence their eating only up until a certain age when the child can no longer feed themselves and after that point what they consume is completely up to them. A child is often not home enough to get a well balanced meal. Most children wake up late for school and rush to school and on the way eat something quick and unhealthy. Once they arrive at school for lunch they will have something that seems more appetizing rather than healthy such as cookies or pretzels. For dinner time, maybe they will have a healthy meal but if they are not home you do not know what they are consuming. If a child is having a play date, the parent may take them to a restaurant where your child eats the most unhealthy thing there. Children don't know the nutritious values they need in a day and only like to eat what they think looks the most appetizing. This phase they are in may pass but if not the child will be in a lot of trouble later.

"Parents influence their eating only up until a certain age when the child can no longer feed themselves and after that point what they consume is completely up to them."
By that time they are not a child anymore.

But think about it, if the parents were responsible wouldn't they teach them what is healthy and what is not? Wouldn't they teach them to eat healthy?

"If a child is having a play date, the parent may take them to a restaurant where your child eats the most unhealthy thing there."
The parent is there, why not monitor your child's eating habits? Besides, just one play date will not make a child obese.

Contention 1- Responsible Parenting
A responsible parent would teach their child to eat healthy. Parents control what their child eats most of the time.

Contention 2- Exercise
Responsible parents know about exercise and will have their children do it.
