~RULES:
This should be a formal debate and presentation of points should be clear and applicable.

As Con, I will be arguing that social media does have more pros than cons and has brought many benefits to us.

~DEFINITIONS:
Social Media: websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking.

http://www.oxforddictionaries.com...

~ARGUMENT:
Viral. Free. Impactful. Social media provides people with a set of platforms on which people are given the freedom and ability to speak their minds and be heard. Sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube now host an astounding 7 billion users worldwide, connecting people from all around the globe.

Although at times, conflicts do occur due to differing viewpoints and opinions. Nevertheless, social media cannot be blamed for the rise in conflicts between people, and social media has indeed brought more benefits than consequences to the humankind.

Because of social media so many companies and people are using it to gain money meaning that now we must have advertisements in even more places of our lives. Facebook and Twitter are required to use certain websites so that companies can spam people with social media alerts. We already have texting and email and the news so social media is essentially nothing new and has brought only harm to modern society.

Take the phone application Instagram for example. Instagram is a social media application that allows people to share their photos freely with people from across the globe. Something new on social media that texting and email can never accomplish. The main plus point of social media is that it is able to reach out to a large group of people across the world in a short period of time. Instagram allows people to connect with their peers who share similar interests, allowing us to expand our horizons.

To address the point on advertisements, advertisements are not always bad. Just like how we have advertisements during commercial breaks on the television, advertisements on social media platforms do not actually bring harm to us. Instead, they can actually bring more convenience into our lives when we manage to find something that we need from online advertisements. Together with the fact that many online advertisements are based on complex online algorithms to assign advertisements based on our search queries, we may very well find what we are looking for through these advertisements. Rather than blaming social media, it is our own resolve and our own choice whether or not to succumb to the influence of advertisements.

On instagram recently i did a survey and out of all the visible photos and i follow many huge accounts, more than 70% were shoutouts or advertisements. Social media corrupts us by giving us more ways to spread advertisements for useless products or stupid dating sites into our lives.

We have a choice whether or not we want to expose ourselves to these advertisements. Take what was mentioned as an example, we have a choice whether or not to "Follow" the user on Instagram and therefore, are given a choice whether we want to "subscribe" to these 'useless products or stupid dating sites'. Even if we do unintentionally "Follow" a particular user, we can always "Unfollow" him/her any time we wish to when we realize that 'more than 70% were shoutouts or advertisements'. We do not need to subject ourselves to these advertisements.

On the flip side, by providing more ways to 'spread advertisements for useless products or stupid dating sites', producers/developers/entrepreneurs enjoy cheaper forms of advertising their products/goods. Looking at it economically, this may very possibly boost growth in companies/businesses and promote GDP growth in countries.

Therefore, as consumers, we are given the choice whether or not we want to expose ourselves to these advertisements. And they are largely subjected to each individual's take on them - whether or not they deem them to be a nuisance or a convenient form of shopping/searching.
Also, if we think in the shoes of producers/developers, social media provides a cheaper alternative to advertising that may very well play a big role in the success of their business.

Reasons for voting decision: Despite the lack of length, Pro makes somewhat of a reasonable argument. However, Con managed to counter-argue most of Pro's arguments, by saying that we, as the consumers, can manage the amount of advertisements we receive, simply by clicking 'unfollow'. Con also argued the benefit of social media, in that people can connect through it. Conduct to Pro because even though both sides frofeited an equal amount of rounds, Con forfeited first.
