Have you ever been to the Auschwitz-Birkenau open-air museum in Poland? [1] If so, you will no doubt have had a look around the accommodation blocks, pottered about in the gas chambers for a while and then you probably had your photo taken under the iconic "Arbeit Macht Frei" gates, but after that the only thing left for you to do would have been to visit the Permanent Exhibition. This is how the Auschwitz promotional material describes this particular attraction:

"The exhibition opened in 1955 remains one of the main elements in visits to the site, along with areas featuring original or partly reconstructed objects. Aside from documentary photographs, photocopies of documents, models, and sculptures, it also used historical exhibits including prisoner garments, bunks and other furnishings from prisoner rooms, and items seized from Jewish deportees."

Doesn't sound like much fun, does it? And it isn't, I promise you – but then it's not intended to be - the exhibition represents a solemn reminder to future generations of what can happen if people allow their nationalist sentiments and prejudices against ethnic minorities to be exploited by extreme right-wing politicians like the Nazis.

Of course, it is especially important for children and young adults to learn the lessons of history but learning should be fun and, with the best will in the world, no young person is going to get excited by a load of black and white photographs and some dusty old exhibits.

That's why the torment, misery and death that the prisoners of Auschwitz suffered at the hands of their Nazi captors should be brought to the attention of visitors (or "guests" as they will be known) by means of anti-fascist themed amusements such as:

Goebbels' Ghost Train
Himmler's Helter Skelter
Kaltenbrunner's Carousel
Goering's Gas Chamber of Horrors
War Crimes Waltzer
Anti-Fascist Ferris Wheel
Aryan Racing Cars
Waffen-SS Water-SSplash
Reichsfhrer's Rollercoaster
Hitler's House of Fun

Each of these attractions would include depictions of the terrible crimes against humanity committed by the Nazis and there would be multi-lingual hosts on hand to answer any questions about the Holocaust that the guests might have.

Of course, all this activity will make the guests hungry, which is why the gas chambers will be converted into a pizza restaurant and the crematory ovens fired up once again and used to bake the pizzas in. Here's what the menu could look like:

PIZZAS
Nazi Neapolitan
Genocide Genoa
Fascist Fiorentina
Death March Margherita
Storm Trooper Supreme
Holocaust Hawaiian
Persecuted Pepperoni
Goose-Stepping Sloppy Giuseppe

DRINKS
Selection of Waffen-SS SSodas
Selection of Deutschland ber Ales (including Birkenau-Brau and Konzentrations Lager)
Freshly-squeezed orange Jews (not made from concentration campers)

Of course, Hitler and his evil henchmen would be absolutely outraged by this mockery of their names and what they called "die Endlsung" - their ‘final solution' to the ‘Jewish problem', and for this reason and for the educational benefits that it would provide young people, I affirm that Auschwitz-Birkenau should be converted into an anti-fascist themed amusement park.

Thank you.

Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp was a place of torture, death and emotional turmoil. There, 3 million Jews died of starvation, disease, and forced in to chambers filled with Hydrogen cyanide. It is no place for children, let alone any form of amusement, anti-fascist or not. Auschwitz should be a place of mourning, a place to learn, and look back on the past in hope to not repeat it. Auschwitz should be left the way it is, as a place for mourning and not amusement of any fashion. It sickens me that the very thought of such a politically, religiously, and ethnically depressing place would even attempt to reform itself as an amusement park

With many thanks to ogopie for accepting this challenge I should like to rebut his assertion that Auschwitz "is no place for children".

Indeed it is, and even today the Auschwitz-Birkinau Memorial and Museum caters for school parties and even organises one and two-day residential study visits. [1]

I believe that it is important that kids today are made aware of the atrocities that were committed against Jewish and Gypsy children in Auscwitz in the 1940's - indeed, I would argue that their appreciation of the fear that these poor children experienced could be enhanced in an amusement park setting with realistic historical re-enactments.

For example, a busload of children on a study visit to Auschwitz could be dropped off at the "Arbeit Macht Frei" gate and once they were all through, dozens of hosts dressed in Nazi storm trooper uniforms could spring out and surround them, slam the gates shut behind them and march them into an empty building for ‘processing', all the time yelling: "Raus! Raus! Have you not heard? Ze var is back on. Schnell! Schnell!"

Inside, the children will be made to stand in a row where ‘SS officers' would ‘interrogate' each one, asking questions such as:

"Do you know how to operate an industrial sewing machine?"
"Can you forge British banknotes?" and
"Do you have any gold teeth?"

After the ‘interrogation' the group of children would be split into two: the first group would be told they are going to "work to earn their freedom" and be led out of one door while the second group would be told they are going to "take a shower" and be led out of another door.

Of course, once outside they would be reunited and told that the whole exercise was just an act and they are now allowed to go on the rides, but I believe this experience would give today's kids a much better appreciation of what children endured in Auschwitz during the war than any old photos ever could, and for that reason I reaffirm that Auschwitz-Birkenau should be converted into an anti-fascist themed amusement park.

Thank you.

Jeepers criminy, I'm not even certain why I should continue...

Fine, I said, "Being," but your next statement, "Humans" proved that you, as well as ALL other readers would automatically comprehend exactly what I meant - not being ignorant of history and exactly what occurred at Auschwitz.

You then jumped to, "Beasts," and that is what I responded to. As the conversation progresses, you jump from accusation and topic to another, thereby convoluting the original topic and creating a series of red herrings. For example, this debate regards the conversion of Auschwitz into an amusement park. You haven't even mentioned the place since page 2.

Perhaps I don't particularly concern myself with your biased and fallacious beliefs of the Bible. What the blazes clothing has to do with homosexuality is both irrelevant and unproven by yourself. Furthermore, "Most" is up to interpretation.

The bible is an accurate source now?
http://en.wikipedia.org...
"The biological definition of the word refers to all members of the kingdom Animalia, encompassing creatures ranging from insects to humans"
Now even without getting into the animal debate

your quote

"You do realize that those furnaces cremated the bodies <<of thousands of beings>> who were starved to death, tortured, shot etc? It would be almost sacrilegious (not to mention repulsive) to utilize them for merriment and the preparation of comestibles for craving individuals. It would be more fitting to allow the beings to experience a very slight example of the hunger that the victims felt as they starved slowly to death."

You never once said people, you only said beings.

I just pointed out that nearly all of America supports this daily, so its not really any different.

You then go on to say
"I think not. One can hardly compare the consumption and preparation of animals to the intentional mass destruction of human beings. Human was given rule over the "beasts of the earth," and consuming them is an age long necessity."

Thats nice, but never did you say that humans are the only organisms or beings.

And just so you know, I don't give a sh!t what the bible says. People pick and choose, and most people don't believe in it at all (evidence is christians often wear clothes of two different materials yet claim homosexuality is a sin that must be fixed, without attempting to change their wardrobe.)

And how do you prove such a fallacious statement? Dictionary.com describes beast as, "1. Any nonhuman animal." Human is not of the kingdom animalia, and is of the lone genus, "Homo."

Ego has nothing to do with it. If one were to refer to the Bible, human was set apart to "Rule the beasts of the earth." (Genesis 1.)

You're adept at red herrings.

Humans are the worst beasts and only think they "rule" to boost their fragile ego.

Wait, isn't that what we do every time we go to burger king? Kfc? McDonalds?

You obviously do not comprehend the magnitude of atrocities committed at Auschwitz-Birkenau. I suggest you do some research and then ask me, "What's wrong with turning it into a place where all can party, celebrate and enjoy the site where some of Nazism's worst deeds were committed. Lets commemorate human pain, suffering and Death!"

I am not opposed to adding interractive displays - I think that's a swell idea. But nothing in Auschwitz should provoke mirth or provide delightful entertainment for insouciant and ignorant individuals.

I like the idea. Whats wrong with making it entertaining, and why not use whats already there?

I'm not certain if "Amusement Park" is the right description. One should never take lightly the horrors experienced by millions of victimized. However, I like the idea of restoring the area and adding educational and interractive displays. And, perhaps, even actors and effects to simulate the past - such as the oven idea. It would, of course, be abominable to renovate the actual ovens and utilize them for comestibles - quite grotesque. But one could modify modern ovens to look like the stone/steel furnaces. And, of course, one would have to be very cautious not in any way to promote Hitler, his crimes or Nazism. "Hitler Fun House" would be out.
