Yes, that is right Australia is a better place to live in than the USA. This I will demonstrate convincingly through the four rounds. My points will be.

1) How the living standard in the USA is poor.
2) How the living standard in Australia is superior to the USA

My opponent must demonstrate why Australia is not a better place to live than the USA, statistics would be appreciated.

I hope those who vote base their vote on how either side debated, and not their opinion.

I thank whoever accepts this debate.

Well I find it pretty disappointing that my opponent has not responded. So I suppose I won't be doing any sort of rebuttal this round.

Either way, I'll do a few (I was planning to do a lot more) points as to why the living standard in the USA is poor.

-The United States is 49th in the world in literacy (the New York Times, Dec. 12, 2004)

-The United States ranked 28th out of 40 countries in mathematical literacy (NYT, Dec. 12, 2004)

-Lack of health insurance coverage causes 18,000 unnecessary American deaths a year (NYT, Jan. 12, 2005.)

-The United States is 41st in the world in infant mortality. Cuba scores higher (NYT, Jan. 12, 2005)

-Women are 70 percent more likely to die in childbirth in America than in Europe (NYT, Jan. 12, 2005)

I was planning a much more comprehensive round this round, but I don't really think I should bother if I'm not going to get a response.

Anyway, hopefully those judging recognise that my opponent has not posted anything yet and take this into account.

Well anyway, to sum up some points I was going to use....

The USA has serious socio-economic problems such as a nearly 10 trillion dollar debt which equates to roughly $31,000 debt per person.

Australia is consistantly ranked above the USA in major living standard studies such as the economist and mercer's study of the 'most livable' cities in the world, as well as the Human development index and the human poverty index.

Anyway, with nothing to respond to and for no real debate to be had, theres no choice but a PRO vote.

Thanks.

Libertarian-style freedom is one that comes as close as I've seen to what I see as "true freedom." But unbridled capitalism is just part of the equation. Property rights, tax minimization and lifestyle freedoms make up the rest. True freedom is not good or bad, but brutally fair and impartial.

Fair enough, from my perspective.

I think the problem with defining true freedom is that you can't define very well it without making it something other than freedom.

Well, I don't have a ready definition of "true capitalism," but the U.S. used to be WAY LESS socialist and WAY MORE capitalistic than it is today. Today's liberals would have JFK and even FDR spinning in their graves. And today's republicans (ie John McCain) would have blended right in with liberal democrats of just a few decades ago.

"True capitalism" is nothing more than true freedom. It is a model worth pursuing, but I can't say it has ever been fully implemented. The form of government our founding fathers had intended(small, limited, and non-intrusive), before the libs shredded it, came pretty close. You know, that form of government that helped the U.S. blow the doors off countries that have been around for over 1000 years to become the leading world power in just over 100 years. That would work for me.

When has there ever been "true capitalism"?

Good point. Do you know why? Because well-run socialism is 2nd only to true capitalism. What we have now are the remains of a capitalist country that has been severely compromised. You can graph the direct correllation between the demise of our country's economic superioriortiy and the rise of socialism.

HandsOff, all those countries that are better than the U.S. have HIGHER taxes and MORE business regulation.

It's probably easier to argue a European country is richer, as most of your statistics have Europe in even better shape than Australia.

In fact, the US census puts the median income at $24,000 a year. This is comparable to many European minimum wages.

It's not too difficult to argue social conditions are better outside the US. But richer should be mostly economics, shouldn't it?

If the democrats take over, it might be time to start shopping around for a new place to live. Taxes will be even more outrageous; the dollar already sucks; the national debt is out of control; and the social services they have planned will be the death nail. Any ideas? Are there any countries left that encourage capitalism, sound monetary policy, low taxes and self-reliance?
