Let it be said I would prefer an Australian opponent or at least someone who has followed the recent debate in Australia on this issue.

As an allegedly virtuous nation which vows to accept refugees in its national anthem, and which also is wealthy, Australia must start showing some compassion. We let not only refugees suffer when they need us most, we even let the indigenous peoples and even the cities' homeless suffer. We have the means to stop all of these hardships but we choose to do nothing. Many Australians have displayed an offensively racist attitude when discussing this issue. Many are also under the misguided notion that asylum seekers who arrive by boat, "boat people", are entering Australia illegally, but under international law, this is incorrect. Australia has ratified all necessary UN law which would require us to allow anyone claiming to be refugees into the country and let them seek refuge. We have not been held to our commitments, and this is unacceptable.
While we claim to be good people who believe in "the fair go" and other such Australian values, we have not acted in what we like to call the Australian way. It has made me ashamed to reside in this country.

I eagerly await an opponent.

That only applies 1. If they can successfully argue persecution (likely) and 2. Make it into Australian waters. :P It's why Rudd's current policy is to have Indonesia pick them up before they reach Australian territory.

I'd argue against you on that the Government needs to help after they arrive, other than that, yes asylum seekers should have access.
