First of all, I want to say, that we all in general consider Mercedes as car for comforable and calm driving, while BMW as sporty and dynamic vehicle and I think that assertion about Mercedes was appropriate in the past, but now it is just stereotype without any evidence. Nowadays BMW developed and from last 3-5 years doesn't concede in aspect of comfort to Mercedes and in this field they are on the same level of progress. For example if we compare BMW 7 series (F01/F02) and Mercedes S class (W221) only in comfort and smoothness of ride, we will realize that Mercedes isn't more comfortable or better for passanger on the rear seat, conversely BMW somewhere has better seats, better smoothness of ride, more settings and so on. But when we involve in the question of sport and speed, there is no doubts that the winner is certainly BMW, because no one can compare with BMW ///M, which is the legislators and they are much better than Mercedes AMG. Let's just compare BMW M6 GC and Mercedes CLS 63 AMG. The M6 feel itself much confident and better on the track and also it's faster in the drag race.

Mercedes essentially invented the internal combustion engine and generally speaking the automobile.

It dates from the 1800s.

BMW arrived in the 1920s and was a very small player up until the 2002 took off in the 1970s. It was more into aircraft engines than cars.

Mercedes makes all kinds of commercial vehicles, trucks, etc. BMW only makes motorcycles in addition to its car lines. Mercedes owns Chrysler; BMW owns Mini. Mercedes is a large corporation with lots of stockholders; BMW is mostly privately owned by the Quandt family.

The biggest thing BMW has going for it in the USA is its dealers and its customers, because besides the fact BMW has more quality problems than Mercedes by far, its customers don't complain as much and its dealers are better at fixing them and therefore the problems are unknown to the majority.

BMW's image is the same worldwide, i.e. the "sporting" alternative to Mercedes.

The fact that Mercedes was the first company, who invented the car doesn't mean that today they are the best in this field. I know a lot of cases when some new player entered the game and became the number one. For example look at the market of cell-phones in 2006-2007. Nokia sells the majority of phones and nobody can compete with them, but in 2007 Apple with their iPhone suddenly came on the scene and the reaction of Nokia was something like this:"It is nice product, but it won't achieve any real success". However, where is Nokia now and where is Apple now? That's what I'm talking about. Returning back to BMW's past. At the beginning, BMW was creating aircraft engine, but this experience gave only positive effect, when they started making engines for cars. They already had experience in developing more difficult airplane engines.

Secondly, of course BMW doesn't produce any trucks, etc., but this fact doesn't interfere to make best passenger cars and when I say that BMW is better than Mercedes, I don't mention trucks and other kind of vehicles, that BMW doesn't make. We can't compare things that BMW doesn't have in principle. Mercedes owned Maybach and it has closed, while BMW's Rolls-Royce thrives and their sales increase every year. Also as an opponent for Mini, Mercedes has Smart. I didn't see nothing worse than Smart. One thing that I also want to mention is net profit of these companies. The net profit of BMW twice more even than Daimler AG.

According to JD Power statistics, BMW has 114 defects for 100 cars, while Mercedes only 106. I agree that there is some small difference which is not in favor for BMW, but this is all because of the manner of usage. Almost all owners of BMW try to drive fast, that is why spare parts die faster.

Thus, in my mind, BMW is better almost in every way for general consumer, because it's more comfortable and more sporty than opponent - Mercedes-Benz.

Given their disparate histories, geography, and culture, conflict is inevitable. Daimler, Mercedes' parent, is the successor to a company founded in 1883 that invented the automobile and never tires of reminding the world of that fact. BMW got started in 1917 as a maker of aircraft engines and didn't get into making cars until 1928. Stuttgart, home to Mercedes, is a grey factory town where the sun seldom shines, while BMW is rooted to party-happy Munich. Finally, Mercedes, elitist to its core, reveals its true self in its motto "The best or nothing," coined by Gottlieb Daimler. BMW fashions itself as creator of the "ultimate driving machine," a tagline created by an American advertising agency

"The best or nothing". What is the Mercedes talking about? Definitely not about them self, because it's clear for everyone that they are not best, it is silly to assert that you are the best. Usually this is argument of children or the side which doesn't have any real advantages and they starting give some stupid phrases such this, while the tag line of BMW is intelligible. It suggests that this car gives you joy and satisfaction behind the steering wheel. It is the tool for the best driving in the world and this is true by far. Mercedes is car for retirees that live and believe in stereotypes where Mercedes is the best. For other sane part of population it isn't secret that BMW went ahead the Mercedes-Benz. Just check the amount of sales of both. You will understand that the time when Mercedes was on the first place already passed away. Now it's time of the best one - BMW.

Mercedes-Benz plays a pioneering role particularly in the field of safety technology. Many innovative ideas which became reality for the first time in a Mercedes-Benz passenger car continue to influence all aspects of automobile development to this day. They include the anti-lock braking system (ABS, 1978), the airbag (1980) and the Electronic Stability Program (ESP", 1995). Today, Brake Assist Plus with PRE SAFE Brakes, the drowsiness detection system ATTENTION ASSIST, Blind Spot Assist, Lane Keeping Assist and Collision Prevention Assist, installed as standard in the Mercedes-Benz A- and B-Class, together with many other driver assistance and comfort systems, make Mercedes-Benz vehicles the safest automobiles in the world.
