I do not think that beauty pageants are demeaning to women and should not be banned. I am not talking about Toddlers and Tiaras type pageants, but pageants for adults, such as Miss America. Women who compete in pageants gain a lot of confidence, poise, and they make friends for life!

Beauty pageants are really comparative competitions to see whose the prettiest. You ultimately make whoever's watching insecure. It's an unfair trade-off. Yes, those women on TV will get the confidence that most women need. But that confidence comes from the wrong place. Would you rather be proud that you were born beautifully, or by the very work your own hands have done? Also, you're not helping other women with these pageants. These things encourage women to think their value comes from their appearance. Would you like that?

Based on your comments, I am assuming that you have never competed in pageants. One thing that you probably don't know as someone who is not involved in the pageant circuit, is that a lot of pageant systems, such as the Miss America Organization, require contestants to have a platform, which is a cause or organization which a contestant has chosen to volunteer for, raise money for, or bring awareness to. Many contestants even choose to start up programs in their area to help address the problem.
Also, the Miss America Organization is one of the world's largest providers for scholarships for young women. Many pageant contestants have chosen to compete in the Miss America Organization because they are either going through school, or are working to pay off student loans after they have received their degrees.
Another thing you might not have thought of, is that pageant contestants are also judged on their talents, some of which are very impressive, and you can tell that the contestants have worked hard to perfect their talent and are proud of it.
Not only do the contestants have to have a platform and a talent, but they also have an interview with the judges which is 25% of their score. the contestants must know current events, and must be loaded up on facts and statistics about their platforms.
I don't think that pageants encourage women to think that their value comes from their outer appearance, because the young women who compete in all pageant systems are smart, confident, talented, and beautiful women inside and out.
