Beauty is relative. What is "beautiful" cannot be specifically defined to include the thoughts and opinions of every individual. The media's version of beauty cannot reflect what is in the hearts and minds of every human being. Yes, an attractive woman may be said to be beautiful in every respect. But that doesn't mean that an aesthetically average girl cannot be deemed beautiful by just one person who loves her. Beauty is just a word used to describe an indescribable appreciation for what truly is right in front of you, something that provokes you, and makes you appreciate it's worth.

Thank you for this good topic of debate, and good luck. My first argument is that beauty is not in the eye of the beholder. We see this through art. Throughout history and civilizations, we see the same themes. We see people who are in love, and scenery like sunsets, rolling hills, mountains, etc. If beauty was relative, then we wouldn't see this same theme. The people in history, and in different civilizations find these same things beautiful, otherwise they wouldn't keep having the same themes. If beauty was in the eye of the beholder, then there wouldn't be themes like there are. So the themes in art prove how beauty is not in the eye of the beholder, but is relatively stable.

You make the point of how some women are attractive to some men, while other women aren't attractive to some men, or vice versa. I agree. To disagree with this would be absurd. But there is a difference between attraction and beauty. Attraction involves personalities and interests and dislikes. Beauty is only skin deep.

I understand the idea of recurring themes of beauty across culture, and different ethnicities, and with people all over the world seeing the same things as beautiful. But these things are only beautiful because we have proclaimed it so. Someone decided that these mountains or a sunset was a beautiful, appealing scene, but at the same time, someone else decided that worn, gray building with shingles falling off, or a cold gray rainy sky, was not, in fact, beatiful as well.
Our stable idea of beauty is based solely upon, for lack of a better word, peer pressure.
Our views are influenced, and some that are above this almost natural influence will think indepedently and find beauty in places otherwise unseen, or maybe find a flaw in something widely considered beautiful.

Sugarplum makes a very good argument in her third sentence of the 2nd round. People DECIDE what is beautiful. And the problem then turns to how many supporters one needs in order to claim that something is beautiful: an object, whatever it may be, is not beautiful inherently: it is so because we label it. In some cultures, thin women are the object of a man's desire because the men think they are "beautiful". In others, larger women are pursued. By arguing a Con to Beauty being in the eye of the beholder, from the beginning of the debate, you are saying that there is a universal Beauty. Some things, like sunsets, are seen as more beautiful than say a swamp, by a larger majority of people, but popular consensus DOES NOT EQUAL TRUTH, since there may be some people that do not find any beauty in a sunset. Beauty is subjective: an objective beauty is impossible because of different senses, emotions and thoughts amongst a variety of people.

I'm not sure I can decide who "won" this debate: you both present very good arguments, and could easily both be right, at least part-way. Thank you for presenting your ideas so coherently--it's a breath of fresh air.

On sunday, I am leaving for Africa. And I probably shouldn't have taken this debate, but I guess it didn't register at the time I signed up for it. So I will debate this as much as possible, but when I stop, I am very sorry. For those of you judging, I ask that you would judge based off of what I have said, and not the fact that I can't finish off the debate. Sorry for the inconvenience.
