I will be arguing that being patriotic towards your country is nowhere near being racist against other countries. I'm obviously a patriot, just look at my username.

My opponent will argue that being patriotic IS being racist, which I think is an absurd claim.

First round is for acceptance.

I accept the challenge, and will prove to you why being patriotic is in fact equivalent to being racist.

Let's first look at the definitions for each word:

Patriotic [1]

adjective

1. having or expressing devotion to and vigorous support for one's country.

Racist [2]

noun

1. a person who believes that a partcular race is superior to another.

adjective

1. having or showing the belief that a particular race is superior to another.

___________________________________________________________________

Nowhere in the definition of "patriotic" does it say "believing that your race is superior to another", therefore patriots are not racist.

lets review the phrase 'vigorous support'. A person who expresses such strong emotions towards a country is very likely to assume that the country, and therefore its citizens are superior to the rest of the world.

back to the phrase- support cannot be vigorous if it doesn't entail entirety and absoluteness. Therefore in every aspect, a patriot is adamant on the SUPERIORITY of his country.

so by the definitions of the different words, you can see how they are quite similar, and can very easily be taken to mean one and the same.

Vigorous support does not mean that you place what you are supporting as absolute. The definition of vigorous is:

Vigorous [1]

strong, healthy, full of energy.

You see, vigorously supporting something is like cheering for your favorite team during a sports game.

Nowhere is it implied that vigorously supporting something is placing it above everything else.

Patriots just love their country, that is not at all racist. Shouldn't you love your country?
