Yes, I believe that books are better than movies.

Definitions:
Books - a written or printed work consisting of pages glued or sewn together along one side and bound in covers.
Movies - a motion picture depicting a story through moving images
Better - in a sense more superior

A book is better than a movie for so many reasons. First off, books have no limit in their storytelling. With a movie, it has to be around 1-3 hours for it to tell its story. With a book, the pages could be endless and you can have thousands of pages (if you wanted).

A book is most definitely more detailed; because every scene is described with single words put together, therefore making it clear. A movie, unfortunately, only has the ability to show scenes with moving pictures, which is not always clear to the audience. Not only this, but books CAN have pictures throughout.

Books have lasted longer. They have been around longer than movies ever have, and is part of our history/culture. It's embedded in our lives and is used to educate people around the world even today (textbooks). And this is why books are better than movies.

These are some examples of some movies that are much larger than 3 hours, some even 12! A movie is more clear because you can understand the tone of the character, the time period, and the setting. EX. Harry potter. You know how their in Britain and not America, well some people may think Harry sounds like an American by reading the book, but when you hear the movie, then you know he's British. Sound effects, SFX you can't describe lasers or magic as well as you can in the book. Movies CAN have subtitles throughout too so you know the details.
Movies are generally less boring too. The movie wants you to be sucked in and forget reality for some time. With a book you have to constantly put it down so you can't remember everything. Movie is in and out with everything in your head. Textbooks are especially boring. Teens don't read because of them. Also, in K-College you have to read and study a book if you want to pass. No one wants to take notes every 5 pages but your teacher makes you. With a movie you are happy because even if you have to take notes, it can be done during a movie easier. You can watch a movie and talk about with other people on the spot.
Racism has been around longer than no racism ever has and is part of our history/culture. But movies are historical and part of our culture. They are embedded in our lives and provide education(Documentaries).

My opponent has stated that with movies you can't describe lasers or magic as well as you can in the book. Well first off, with movies all you see is a green/red spark and effects. Cool right? It might seem amusing to the visual mind, but with a book they go into depth about it.They explain that little wisps of smoke ascend from the luminous green sparks that escape the wand's tip. With a movie, you can't really explain what happens because a movie just shows what happens and moves on (talking about Harry Potter).
My opponent has also stated that movies are generally less boring. That isn't a valid statement whatsoever because that's an opinion, not a fact. Not everyone thinks books are boring; some people enjoy books more than movies (like me). When my opponent said that textbooks are especially boring, again, that's an opinion. Maybe that nerd in grade 9 likes to read about the Holocaust all day!
The opposition has also said that the movie sucks you in and makes you forget reality for some time. Yes, that is true, but books can do that too. Do you think that people just read books just to read words on pages? No! They read it to get away from their lives and enter other fictional peoples' lives. They do it to "forget reality for some time".

Now, to further develop my case I'd like to say that books require reading. And reading has been proven to help our cognitive minds a lot in our life! Another thing that books help us with is our memory. It's been said that it improves our memory by a ton, since we have to remember scenes from a book. My opponent may clash back by saying that movies do that too, but I would like to say that books do it better. Why? Well because as he said in his own speech, that we have to put books down so you can't remember everything. Well you have to remember it, because the next time you pick that book up and start reading you'll have to remember what happened before! Books also improve vocabulary and your creativity as well as help you pass the time if you're bored. Concentration is also a benefit to reading, as in order to read you have to stay focused on the book.
