Parvana a 11 year old girl is trying to grow up in a war zone in Afghanistan. The Taliban, a religious extremist group ruled the country while the nation is struggling in every way and her family is trying to survive. Women are under strict commandments to obey and not be at all sexual in society and they can't even show their arms or legs. They must be covered at all times. Parvana dresses up as a boy so that she can work and make some money and support her family. Her parents and all her family members to for her sister's wedding and at that time the Taliban takes over the city and start putting up their own rules of life for people to follow. The Taliban ban people from traveling to and away from cities unless you work. Parvana becomes very alone with her family in that society. She being the only one to work goes to find a job and support her family and find shelter. She meets other friendly kids and other people and they become her family.

Should this book be allowed in public schools?

Con

This book is obviously violent, has negative themes, and should not be allowed in public schools.

Obvious gender inequalities are not good support for the girl.

Con should have used Grape's argument. Shakespeare is used, despite violence and negative themes.

I had to read that book in 10th grade for AP World History. It shouldn't be taught because it sucks, not because of the content. It's written at like a third grade level.

I am fairly certainly that Parvana is loosely based on OreEle.

I think he wants someone to argue that the story he wrote should not be allowed in public schools.

Reasons for voting decision: Neither side stated the resolution, so I relied on Grape's comment to clarify it. Con's argument is not prima facia. Many classics are violent and have negative theme; Tale of Two Cities, etc. Pro loses conduct for forfeit.
