Breathing is good for you because right now you are breathing and if you don't breath you would already be dead by now.

Con

I thank my opponent for creating this debate, and look forward to a fine exchange.

My opponent is arguing that breathing is good for you on the grounds that it sustains life.

I argue that there are a variety of instances in which breathing is very bad.

1. Breathing while underwater, without any sort of scuba gear. If anyone has had this experience, you will know it is not a pleasant one. It feels like your brain is on fire and like your lungs have collapsed. It's called "drowning".

http://en.wikipedia.org...

2. Breathing in a room filled with poisonous gas. Not a good idea. There are many terrible chemical weapons out there and if you are ever stuck in a room with terrible noxious fumes, or even near pesticides, it is a good idea to hold your breath.

http://encyclopedia.farlex.com...

3. Breathing too much (hyperventilation) also causes some nasty side effects such as light-headedness, dizziness, chest pain, etc.

http://en.wikipedia.org...

Thus, breathing might not necessarily be good for you in certain circumstances.

Thank you audience, I await my opponent's rebuttal.

Thank you for joining
1.Breathing is good because deep breathing can soothe your temper
2. Breathing makes you healthy and wise
3. Breathing makes you conscious instead of unconscious
4. When you exercising, you need breath to do exercise
5. Your heart, red blood cells, and more need oxygen which is what you breath in

I await my opponent's rebuttal now
Kleptin

Con

While my opponent has listed many reasons why one should breathe, my opponent has refused to debunk my arguments for situations in which breathing is bad and thus, not always good for you. unless my opponent debunks those points, my argument is dominant.

1. Too much deep breathing can cause lightheadedness and fainting
2. Not if you breathe in water or poisonous gas or insecticide
3. It can also make you unconscious
4. No, what you need is oxygen and glucose.
5. No. When we breathe, it's more than just oxygen. It's mostly nitrogen, oxygen, and some carbon dioxide. THe problem is, as I have said before, there may be other things.

Smelly odors are another example of situations in which you don't want to breathe (though you can breathe orally instead of nasally, still.

Another situation in which you don't want to breathe too much is if you are around allergens. Breathing around peanut powder if you are allergic will cause anaphylactic shock.

I extend all my arguments forward, supporting my stance that breathing is not always good for you but can sometimes be bad. My opponent has responded to none of these points.

I look forward to my opponent's final response. Thank you.

1. Water still as a little bit of air inside
2. You don't need to deep breathing a lot
3. Some smelly odors can't hurt you a lot
This is why breathing is good for you

I look foward to my opponent's final statement
Kleptin

Con

I thank my opponent for this debate and will now wrap up.

1. Yes, but the liquid in the water will prevent gas exchange in the lungs, making the air inside the water negligible.
2. Agreed, but it is still a situation in which breathing can be harmful.
3. Yes, but they are uncomfortable. You might as well hold your breath for a few seconds until you pass by the odor.

My opponent has refused to comment on any of my other points. Thus, I have proven that there are at least a few occasions in which breathing would be BAD for you.

To recap:

1. Breathing while underwater
2. Breathing toxic gas
3. Breathing too much

None of these points were debunked.

Thank you audience, Vote Con.

"Oxygen while necessary for life, also is poisonous and if pure oxygen is breathed in, it would kill you.
"
Not immediately. People take hits of pure or near-pure oxygen recreationally (and faux-therapeutically). It's significant length of exposure or preexisting conditions that render it a problem.

Could have been easily won by PRO... all that needed to happen was clarification. i.e. 'I'm arguing that, under normal, everyday conditions, breathing is a good thing.' <-- makes CON's job so much harder. Because it was never specified WHERE breathing is a good point, default all points to CON. Kudos on completely dominating with a stance most would fear to take. PRO also deserves some credit for making CON's job easier. Double Whammy!

It turns out breathing is the leading cause of cancer. Oxygen when enter cells can interact with other chemicals and become toxins. Your body has ways of getting rid of toxins but it doesn't always get the toxin because of the mass amount produced.

Oxygen while necessary for life, also is poisonous and if pure oxygen is breathed in, it would kill you.

Also, breathing leads to cancer. As does everything else these days.

Since breathing is necessary to stay alive, then breathing is a burden and therefor is bad.

This and the poison debate are without a doubt some of the finest arguments I have ever seen. Kudos to con for taking the most untenable position and owning with it.

Great idea for a debate. Hats off to Con for taking the tougher position and argue something that everyone knows is vital to survive.

Enjoyed it, even though Pro was a bit curt

C: Con addressed the audience and his opponent better, and presented his case well. Pro also addressed his opponent but was too short and curt with his responses and did not bother to acknowledge Pro's points initially. Points go to CON.
S&G: Not much difference in S&G. TIE.
A: PRO did not fulfill burden of proof, nor did he adequately respond to CON's counterpoints. CON raised good counterpoints and also responded whenever PRO did. Points go to CON.
S: CON was the only one who offered sources. Points go to CON.
