On the 23rd of June 2016 the British people voted to leave the European Union by a margin of 52% to 48%. The economic consequences of this decision were profound with the pound falling to a thirty-one year low within twenty four hours. This was the main factor in the surge of inflation that has occurred since, with CPI peaking at 2.9% in May. This figure also outstrips wage growth meaning that real living standards are now falling. For these reasons it is clear that the UK was wrong to vote to leave the EU.
