This debate is instigated in response to Zetsubou's claims that Buddhism is more violent than Christianity. He even went so far as to say that Buddhist scripture itself is more violent than Christian scripture and proposed a debate.

Therefore, my opponent must demonstrate that Buddhist scripture is in fact more violent than Christianity. I will even go so far as to assert that my opponent cannot find, not even one single violent passage in Buddhist scripture.

By the way, the passages have to actually advocate violence, not just contain it.

The first round will be for introductions, definitions, and clarifications.

No semantics.

Buddhist Scripture: The Tipitaka and the Mahayana Sutras.

The Tipitaka (the earliest revealed scripture) contains three Pitakas (or baskets). The first is the Vinaya Pitaka which consists of monastic rules in order to preserve the Dharma (Buddhist doctrine). The second is the Sutta Pitaka which contains various discourses of Siddhartha Gotama Buddha (which covers everything from ethics to phenomenology and existence). The third is the Abhidhamma Pitaka which contains content on philosophy, psychology, and metaphysics and is considered the "higher teachings" that are a very complex. Combined, the Tipitaka consists of 50 volumes and is about 11 times the size of the Bible. (Here's a picture of the entire Tipitaka: http://upload.wikimedia.org...)

The other part of Buddhist scripture includes the Mahayana Sutras which were later revealed. These consist of 6 collections of Sutras covering various topics and discourses of Buddha.

Tipitaka: http://awake.kiev.ua...
Mahayana Sutras: http://www4.bayarea.net...

Christian Scripture: The Bible.

A collection of 66 books divided into the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament contains primarily the words spoken by Yahweh, the Christian God. The New Testament contains primarily words spoken by Jesus Christ.

The Bible: http://www.biblegateway.com...

Now onto my opponent's introduction.

Theravada Buddhism recognises the Pali Canon and Mahayana Sutras as Buddhist scripture. Works by Buddhavacana and his direct followers.

>>>There is no violence in the Pali Canon both preached or as a history; there is only active repulsion of violence.<<<

Only the Pali Chronicles and Sinhala sutras have violence, the concepts of liberating death, self defensive murder and the violent achievement of a noble cause.

I've done my part of the dual burden of Proof; I agree, Theravada Buddhism is non violent.

I make my assertion again, Christian doctrine is also non violent. Your turn.

Though Pro already knows this I want to remind him that the only biblical texts as a whole can be followed. I accept the KJV or NIE of the bible and do not follow Catholic cannon, Syriac cannon or the Dead Sea scrolls. I accept contradictions and changes by our omnipotent god. Christian text holds the world of the messiah, Jesus Christ, to higher esteem than Mosaic Law or any other teaches by other prophets, notably Isaiah or Joshua, unless in a way changed by Jesus christians also follow Mosaic Law. I don't follow any another texts by theologians, cardinals or saints.

Thank you.

===> B U D D H I S T - S C R I P T U R E <===

My opponent makes an irrelevant statement that Theravada Buddhism recognizes the Pali Canon (Tipitaka) and the Mahayana Sutras as Buddhist scripture. Theravada was the earliest Buddhist sect and goes by the Tipitaka (earliest scriptures), but predates the Mahayana Sutras, so they don't really focus on the Mahayana Sutras (which were later revealed). I would like to keep Buddhist sects out of this because it doesn't pertain to this debate.

The focus is simply on the accepted Buddhist scriptures which are the Tipitaka and the Mahayana Sutras. (You can think of it as the Tipitaka as the Old Testament and the Mahayana Sutras as the New Testatment. Anything outside of these are simply not official or legitimate Buddhist scriptures.)

Con: "Only the Pali Chronicles and Sinhala sutras have violence, the concepts of liberating death, self defensive murder and the violent achievement of a noble cause."

These are non-canonical and thus not part of Buddhist scripture. That's like me using the Book of Mormon to argue agaisnt Christianity.

===> C H R I S T I AN - S C R I P T U R E - I S - M O R E - V I O L E N T <===

The Bible of Christianity has 1,197 cruel and violent passages [1] in which God, the figure of worship, either commits violent acts or commands acts of violence. In both cases, the Bible is advocating violence.

As it stands now, there are no passages in Buddhist scripture that advocate violence.

===> C O N C L U S I O N <===

Christian Scripture: 1,197 passages advocating violence.
Buddhist Scripture: 0 passages advocating violence.

Resolution affirmed.

Extend all arguments. It's unforunate he forfieted because he hasn't made an argument for me to refute. He's going to begin an argument without it being challenged.

You live in the first world and such extreme believes tend to omitted. This can also be seen with Sikhs, Hindus and other "classical" faiths.

Actually you have been hounding me every single day for months, and I don't care, every time I see you or anyone wasting our time on this site I'll pass judgement. Your hate campaign against me is irrelevant.

lol, C_N. You never cease to amaze me.

What do you get by purposely going out of your way to follow this debate just to leave such stupid comments; Does it really make you feel better about yourself?

I decided not to bother you, you and I are very different people. I don't go out of my way to bother you and I expect you to follow in kind. Besides, I don't believe it's the 'gentlemanly' thing to do anyway.
