The question today is whether humans can or cannot colonize exoplanets in the future. For the first round, my opponent will accept the debate. For Rounds 2-5, we will place down our arguments and rebuttals.

The Juno mission sent to Jupiter reached the planet several days ago. The reason why Jupiter was selected to be studied was because it was formed around the same time as the Sun. Knowing this can help us understand how the other planets formed soon after. Knowing how our solar system formed is very important because it can also help us understand better how solar systems elsewhere formed as well. If we know the components of other solar systems and their planets, we can determine whether the planet is inhabitable of not. Our rockets are currently not good enough to get us to other systems, but in time, we humans shall find a way to get close to the speed of light, and maybe even break it. Just because Einstein says that it is impossible to break the light barrier, it is not nessesarily true. There are many forms of rockets, such as ion rockets and antimatter rockets, which may take some time to develop.


While I truly hope that Humans find a was to colonize Exoplanets in the future, I feel that this is unlikely due to several reasons.

To colonize a new planet you require several things that are important. Water, Oxygen, Food are all important but can be made or developed using future technology.

The difficult part of the equation is the "human" part. Our bodies were simply not designed to operate in space for any length of time. The human body is subject to extensive damage and deformity from even the smallest amount of space travel - with increased exposure to radiation, increased chances of psychological damage and a decrease in bone density one of the few confirmed occurrences that NASA have studied during the small windows that people have been in space for. If bone density reduces by approx 1% a month living in space [1] - and the nearest potential habitable exoplanet is 13 light years away [2] then even travelling at the speed of light we would need 156 month of space travel to arrive there not including the unknown effects of accelerating & travelling at the speed of light on the human body.

While the mission to Juno was an interesting scientific experiment - the idea behind colonizing planets and humans being functional while doing so is still a long, long way away.

It is true that there are some necessities that all humans including water, oxygen, and food. Water can be made using recycled urine. Food can always be produced in large quantities since it is not filled with water. As for oxygen, plants can always be planted to produce oxygen (plants need carbon dioxide, and we humans release carbon dioxide). There has been questions regarding on how people can survive the long journey in space. There has been an idea called suspended animation. According to a book called Physics of the Impossible, suspended animation slows down body activities and puts people in a coma. This is useful for far away destinations, as the astronauts will age slower.
