It is my strong belief that one cannot support feminism whilst being a theist because the pillars of sexism towards females is due to religion and its teachings. Discrimination towards women is seen everywhere in religion, from women not being allowed to be bishops in Catholicism to women having to cover their hair in Islam. It is the very teachings in not only the bible but in every religious text that can be used as evidence for my argument. You cannot support equality between men and women if you are religious because it is your religion that actually but the inequality there in the first place.

1.) Definitions
In the proposition, Con makes the folly of not properly defining terms, which I will go ahead and do.
Theism: The belief that God exists or that many gods exist.
http://www.merriam-webster.com...
Feminism: The belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities.
http://www.merriam-webster.com...

Now, there is no connection with someone being a theist and someone being a feminist, as these are two unrelated philosophies. Here, Con falls under the trap of false causality, where she makes a false connection with a substantial claim between the link of feminism and theism.

2.) Religion
Con asserts her position, quote, "that one cannot support feminism whilst being a theist". What Con fails to realize is the many woman in the religious world trying to make positive changes for their causes. One such examples is of Sara Hurwitz, who is trying to become the first ordained Jewish Rabbi.

There are many other examples (a Google search of "Religious Feminists" will do), and one can find many examples of religious woman trying to better their respective causes in the religious world.

And women covering their hair in islam
1) Is nowhere in the qaran (there is a modesty passage but it does not mention head covering specifically) because it is a regional/cultural practice.
2) Was originallymeant to support equality between the sexes. It was so women werent seen as just pretty objects, but as intellectuals.

This is just beyond ignorant.

If you knew anything about theology you would know u can be a femenist and a theist. Islam actually specifically says that men and women are exact spiritual and intellectual equals. buddhism, baha'i, daoism, ect. most religions dont say anything about women being inferior. You could make that argument with Christianity or maybe Judaism, but its still very much dependant on your personal interpretation of the text or if you believe in its infalliability or not which many sects do not. So its ridiculous to say theists cant be feminists. If your sexist thats your own fault dont justify it with your faith.
Most sexism from religion relates to the culture of a society and not their actual religious doctrine, though it may be used to justify it particularly in the case of Islam in the middle east.

Reasons for voting decision: Given the duel FFs, I am uncomfortable saying either case was better or worse by a margin sufficient to award arguments. However two out of three sources (the other being wholly neutral) strongly undermine con's case, one even clearly showing the existence of feminist theists.
