The claim that cannabis use kills brain cells is a myth.

While it is true that using cannabis once or twice as a party drug will not cause permanent brain damage, there is a direct correlation between long term-use and a heightened risk of schizophrenia and memory impairment. This was tested by Hall, W. & Solowij, N. (1998). A study in Sweden of 50,000 individuals found a dose-response relation between the frequency of marijuana use by age 18 and the risk of a diagnosis of schizophrenia over the subsequent 15 years. In the study, it was determined that the relative risk of schizophrenia in those who had used cannabis before was 2.4 times greater than in non-users, and for individuals who had used marijuana more than 50 times in their lifetime the risk was 6 times greater than non-users.

I don't disagree. And chronic use of marijuana causes temporary cognitive speed impairment. As with all drugs, there are most likely tremendous side effects. On the spectrum it is thought that marijuana in on the lower end. But that's not my argument. My argument is whether there is research that it causes brain cell loss. I contend that no such proof exists.

Thanks for the clarification, if that is the case then the debate shall end here. I agree that no hard evidence has proved cannabis use causes a destruction of brain cells. Although studies have shown that cannabis can have positive and negative effects on the brain.

I understand. It's a tough one to prove.

I need to made a retraction that your first argument was all agreeable. A new study by Harvard Medical School (just 2 days ago) has debunked that cannabis causes schizophrenia.

Well that seems settled then, a tough debate for both sides as hard evidence has not said cannabis kills brain cells. On the other hand it has not been ruled out.

Does Pro in this debate have to prove marijuana usage damages the brain all the time, or only part of the time?
