I think that teens should get the capital punishment because if they have the capacity of commiting a crime then they should have the courage to accept the consequences.By this action of letting teens recieve the capital punishment the rest of the adolecents will think before acting.Meaning that there is a smaller chance that they will act the same way as the others.

Thank you for starting the debate.

My opponent's entire case is based off of a central idea that since teens have the capacity to commit the crime, they should have the courage to accept the consequences. This seems like a good premise at first, but think about it. Does not a four year-old also have the capacity to commit this crime? What if they do decide to commit this crime? Then, by my opponent's logic, we should be using capital punishment on four year-olds. There has to be more criteria for using capital punishment than what my opponent has set forth.

And that's my opponent's entire case. Other than a deterrence point. Even with that deterrence point, my opponent has not actually offered the evidence that the death penalty works as a deterrent. Since the burden of proof does not lie on the skeptic, I shall ask her to present evidence for that point before it can flow through the round.

Now, to offer a contention on the CON.

By doing this, by allowing capital punishment to be used on teens, we are destroying a big part of what separates adolescents from adults. If we are saying they are old enough to be responsible for this action, then shouldn't the voting age be lowered as well? Drinking age? Military service age? Age of consent? By the resolution, the only qualification here is to be a teen, so this could be as young as thirteen. Do we want thirteen year-olds voting? Do we want thirteen year-olds in the military? Affirming this resolution sets a precedence for destroying the barriers between adolescence and adulthood.

So, in summary:

-My opponent has not offered enough criteria as to what makes it OK to use capital punishment. With her logic, their isn't enough discrimination to keep four year-olds off of the electric chair.

-She has offered no evidence that capital punishment works as an effective deterrent.

-This begins to destroy the barriers between adolescence and adulthood.

Well, I extend all my arguments.

I reiterate that I took out all of my opponent's case; her first point doesn't follow through logically and her second point lacks evidence. Had she provided evidence for it, I would have provided counter-evidence. However, since the burden of proof does not lie on the skeptic, there is no need for me to.

I also remind you that I offered my own contention which, due to the round drop, has gone unattacked.

I urge a CON vote.
