Chelsea F.C are clearly a better side. Recently beating them in the league. In 2014 Manchester United failed to reach the Champions League (The major European trophy tournament) When Chelsea did At the moment Chelsea are the top of the league and are pretty much going to win it, when united struggled to get in the top 4 all season. Manchester United clearly don't have a regular formation or squad changing formations and positions each week.

--Pro's Case--

In repsonse to Pro's justifications:

(a) Pro does not show that the fact that Chelsea recently managed to beat ManU renders them to be a better side. Applying his logic, Aston Villa ought to be considered a better team than Tottenham because they won 1-0. However, any person who is at all familiar with English football would know that this is obviously untrue.

(b) The fact that ManU did not qualify to enter the Champions League does not logically lead towards the claim that "Chelsea F.C is are clearly a better side". This is because in the previous season, ManU were beginning a long, arduous transition (that is still ongoing today) from the philosophy of the retired Sir Alex Ferguson towards other philosophies. Furthermore, for the most part of last season, ManU were managed by David Moyes. Many people did not see David Moyes as competent enought to manage ManU, hence the poor results.

(c) The reason why ManU struggled at the beginning of the season was because of a new manager: Louis van Gaal, who was forced to experiment tactically (by instilling a Dutch footballing aesthetic, of which ManU had never implemented) and rebuild the squad after a poor previous season. Obviously ManU were going to start tentatively. On the other hand, the manager of Chelsea, Mourinho, already had a season to implement his philosophy and shape his team. Obviously there was going to be an unequal footing.

(d) The reason why ManU does not have a regular formation was because van Gaal has not fully implemented his footballing philosophy, and has to experiment so that the particular nuances of ManU's squad, previous footballing philosophy etc. can be adequately implemented. As a matter of fact, it could be argued that ManU now DO have a regular formation: a 4-3-3. Furthermore, not having a regular formation or squad cannot necessarily be a negative attribute. Look at Bayern Munich, under Guardiola, for instance, who changes formations and players probably even more than van Gaal does. Even so, their success is undisputable; look at the Bundesliga table, their 6-1 win over Porto etc etc

--My Case--

I will quickly present a case: History.

The facts are clear: ManU has won 13 titles since the inception of the Premier League, Chelsea has won 3. ManU has won 20 top division titles (so incl. titles before the Premier League was formed in the late 20th century), Chelsea has won 4. Looking at the total Premier League table (from 1992/93 - today), ManU has earnt over 200 more points than Chelsea.
