I believe religion has a negative effect on children, and minds so young and impressionable should not be influenced by such a powerful thing. Please note I am not speaking against religion, I simply feel that children should grow up without it, and then when they are more mature, they can make an educated decision and choose a religion that suits them, instead of them being forced to be Christian/Muslim/Atheist etc. I also believe this will make better, more open people who make better choices for themselves.

Serious debate please.

Religion is part of discipline.

Sorry but that is hardly a valid argument.
Religion is a part of discipline? By that statement are you saying children need to be disciplined? Instead of treating them as people, you are suggesting they are treated like dogs, forced into submission with fear and promises of an afterlife. These are children we're talking about. If a parent fails to raise their child, they should turn to religion and fear? I do not agree. People deserve choice and open-mindedness, something religion often takes away.

Religion provides morality. Children should not be brought in fornication, adultery, intoxication, homosexuality, jealousy, resentment. Anything that is not moral is sinful. Religion is the only way to keep children out of these sinful acts. If not, then that's a problem. Children need to be disciplined.

To begin with, religion does not stop "fornication", homosexuality, jealousy, resentment and drunkenness. Surely any capable parent, religious or not, would not expose their child to such things.

Also, sin and lack of morals are not necessarily the same thing, from an objective view.

You are also proving my point. Fornication or sex, is not a sin, neither is homosexuality, intoxication, jealously or resentment. In fact, they are normal human reactions, some uncontrollable, and some inevitable. By telling children these are sins, you are setting them up for a life of shame and pain, forced to believe there is something wrong with them, rather than being told the truth. They are human. They are flawed. But them having sex, or coming out gay are not "problems". They are facts of life. They don't need to be "disciplined" out of it. They need to be given the room and opportunity to be who they want to be, not to be stunted at a young age by cruel standards that they have been born into.

Which brings me back to my point. A child should be kept away from religion until they makes their own choice regarding it. Look how people can be. How can you want a child to be brought into such hate?

I like Con's Alias: AmericaTheFatherland, considering that the Founding Fathers envisioned an America free of Religion. Thomas Pain and Jefferson both had a great dislike for The Bible and did not want any connection between The Bible and America.

BTW: The fact that the Human genome contains Neanderthal DNA, shows that Religion has missed something in human history.
Apparently there was much sex between Neanderthals and Homo Sapiens. Maybe our ancestor women found Neanderthal men attractive or Vice Verse.

So you're telling me that you need a book and/or a made up religion in order to tell you not to kill someone? So if there was no holy book or religion, then you would be killing people from left to right, raping any women you see, stealing from any person you come across, etc? No you wouldn't (unless you're mentally ill), because we as a people are able to think (for the most part) reasonably and create LAWS in order to prevent such barbaric behavior. Reasonable laws > fears from "holy" text.

without religion there is no morality --> poeple will care about good and bad (especially in this materialist era --> all things will be consider as a subjective matters --> the strong one lives - the poor dies.

The con for this is definitely invalid. Religion is in no way part of discipline. The bible says that children who curse at their parents should be stoned to death. I don't think that should be anyone's idea of discipline.

Reasons for voting decision: I think anyone can tell that Pro took this debate seriously, and Con did not. Pro made a couple decent arguments, and refuted Con's few glib assertions. Then, of course, Con forfeited his last two responses - assuring Pro the win.
