We have a society that generally endeavours to protect its citizens. It is designed to protect them from both themselves and others. Drugs are illegal due to the harm that they can do to people who take them. Cigarettes have been shown to be as powerful if not more powerful than some illicit drugs in causing detriment to peoples health. Why then do we not ban these substances?

Although a contentious issue, alcohol has been shown to have some benefits in moderation. In contrast, there has been no safe level of tobacco demonstrated. In addition the number of diseases that can be caused or contributed to by cigarettes far outweighs any other illicit substance.

The cost to the healthcare system is greater than any other individual factor. Tobacco related diseases cost more than alcohol, obesity, and far greater than any illicit drug. The tax revenue gained from cigarettes does not cover the cost to the state of providing healthcare to those with tobacco related diseases.

This is a substance that can cause far more disease than any illegal drug, and it is freely available at any time of day.

The issue with tobacco is that it's one of the most widely used substances in the nation. Tobacco is also a major factor and cash-cow in the American economy.

We as humans have free-will and choice to harm ourselves, and that's our right by nature. If we so choose to ruin our biological health with substance abuse, then so be it.

Tobacco is also a large part of religious tradition in Native American tribes. Would we forbid them from growing the plant on their land, or are we going to allow a single ethnic and religious group to be the exception to the law?

Since my opponent forfeited the last round, and I hate to argue without someone fighting back, I shall leave this without an argument.
