Communism is an old idea that does not work. Soviet union was a fiasco and so is cuba and china.

Hello there,

I find it funny how I was so openly attacked within (literally) five minutes of creating my 'debate.org' profile. Has the world manufactured this much hate, this much anger towards meaningless titles such as 'Communism' that, at first glance, your malevolence speaks out and says, "how dare you be a communist living in my country!!!!". This I might never know, but typical human instinct is a very primitive thing that will, one day, if we're lucky, be overcome with simple evolution (if our society doesn't radically disappear, i.e, nuclear fallout, etc..).

Okay, so, since you really don't have an opening statement -just a bunch of words of incoherent opposition- why don't you ask me something a little more specific than stating how 'evil I am'. Anything, anything at all, and maybe this will be an interesting debate.

You people have no idea what "freedom" means. Thus, you're entirely unable to comprehend what a "free market" would look like. The Republican Party was founded in opposition to the free market -- for tariffs, protectionism, corporatism, government handouts to business, regulations, internal improvements, subsidies, and a national bank emitting fiat currency. These are NOT elements of a "free market" and they are still what the GOP and "conservatives" stand for today.

DocORock- Im with you here, I have noticed that radical libertarians tend to demonize others to push their own unrealistic views. Saying that conservatives are against the free market is like saying that liberals are against welfare. Clearly a statement that is out of touch with reality

CLSMOOTH:

Quoting you: "Conservatives are (almost without exception) against capitalism." Oh my God. Are you Conservatives really that uneducated? Wait, wait - one more time: "Conservatives are (almost without exception) against capitalism." AH...AH-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

ARRIVALTIME:

You were correct in your statement to this Conservative (a week ago). Can you believe he really said, "Conservatives are (almost without exception) against capitalism"? Wow. What a smart fella you're conversing with there...

"By the way, why did you leave the Kibbutz?"

I did not "live" there as in think of the place as home, My family visited some people there, and I slept, ate, and stayed in the kibbutz for 2 weeks. Sorry for the misunderstanding. I was sorry to leave, as a matter of fact.

Because I think people are idiotic, immoral, and elitist, to want to be poor, and to live in a way that does not in any way contribute to the betterment of the world. A cure for cancer is not going to come out of a voluntary commune. Division of labor, comparative advantage, and free trade raise living standards, allow people to live longer and happier. Divorcing yourself from the world to go "back to the Earth" is selfish and stupid.

Why are people idiots if they want to live in a socialist commune?

Just because some people have different priorities than you and value things that you don't value doesn't make them idiots. That was a rash comment. Maybe you didn't mean to say idiot.

Unless you actually have a good reason, in which case I would love to know what it is. And I mean that sincerely.

All the Kibbutz shows is that socialism can work if it is voluntary and if people don't mind sharing their living quarters with goats, etc. But in order for it to be voluntary, there must be an alternative. I think people who want to live in socialist communes are idiots, but I respect their right to do so. The Kibbutz is a voluntary community, not one enforced by the state.

By the way, why did you leave the Kibbutz?

"The Kibutz lasted a long time (longer than any other commune I know of), but are they still going now? Not at the same level."

First, it's "kibbutz", and second, please take it from someone who has not only been to the kibbutz, but ived in one for 2 weeks, that they are certainly "going", and that it certainly works. PLease take my word for it, that the kibbutz are very efficent communities.

In fact, some of the most efficient, they were almost completely self-sustaining...they could probablly be completely shut off from the outside world, and still work for quite a while.

The kibbutz to which I stayed in had everyhting a small comunity needs, including, goats, cows, fields of crops, horses, and a plastics factory.

I can tell you first hand, that this community, most definitely "worked" (to say the least). It is even a prefferable place to live, if I can say so.

So how can you say socialism doesn't work?

mikewallace - Historically, conservatives have been opposed to free markets. Even today, most conservatives are mercantilists, not capitalists. Adam Smith wrote Wealth of Nations to proselytize free-market capitalism AGAINST the dominant economic system of his day, mercantilism. Adam Smith was considered a liberal in his day, and the enemies of capitalism were considered conservatives. So if YOU are for free markets and consider yourself a conservative, that's fine by me. Ron Paul also considers himself a conservative. But he is pretty much the only public figure I know who identifies with conservatism and yet promotes laissez-faire free-market capitalism in the Adam Smith tradition.

I agree with you clsmooth, there is no good reason to believe in Marxism, I believe that it is as dangerous having people push for communism in this country as it is to have people pushing for fascism. But just for the record, the statement that all conservatives are against a free market is quite innacurate. I am a pro free market conservative. Every conservative I have ever had any association with is for the free market. You could argue that republicans are not as the party has no doubt abandoned its traditional roots, but traditional conservatives such as myself are completely in favor of the free market and enjoy its benifits.
